If we can post nudity and streaming video (not necessarily together) :) yes. Definitely yes.

Stormrage posted Wed, 24 July 2002 at 11:10 PM

ohh and i should add that within 6 months there will not be a cap on bandwidth at all, meaning that your pocketbook would not feel the effects of your generosity to the poser community.

nudity yes.. pornography no, because of canadian porn laws. Nudity will be allowed but because of the porn laws we'd have to go through each site to determine if the images are acceptable. In time we may be able to offer something along those lines, but at the present time Artistic nudity will be the only thing allowed. streaming video is definately planned for and more.

I would be interested. I pay that much now just to get rid of the ads at Angelfire and hot linking. I could also put up stuff in freestuff easier.

I've got my own hosting, thanks, but some people might be curious: would people be able to have their own domain names (me.com), subdomains (me.thunderstorm.com), or just subdirectories (thunderstorm.com/me)? Humorously enough, I'd been looking at getting a server and considered asking if people here were interested in space/bandwidth as well. I decided that I have too much I'm supposed to be doing though, as is, without making my life more complicated. If you don't mind, could you IM me where you're hosting, as I'm looking for a good provider? Thanks!

Might be interesting, but remember the competition. www.addr.com has some good packages.

just so you have a couple of points of comparison... I have a bizland.com "charter" account that I host part of my freebies from (no ads 70megs space 2.5GB transfer CGI, PERLm SSI, etc etc for $5.95/month) I also ran across a service that I haven't tried yet, but looks very attractive, 250free.com that offers a "platinum" service (no ads 250 megs space 8GB transfer POP3 email, MySql, SSI, php, perl, CGI. etc etc $5.95/month)

perlscript, javascript, php mysql postgresql all available..with a bit more effort in configuring apache even frontpage extention support and .net / .asp ( though that is a gaping security hole ) until we can get the higher bandwidth connection, we could only offer subdirectories, but full domains after get more expensive connection. to get started would have to limit bandwidth, only for a couple of months, then would be able to go to unlimited bandwidth. ( need to build the setup cost for that connection ) the rates wouldn't alter when we do mange to get the more expensive connection with unlimited bandwidth, as we have been looking and planning on doing this for a while. we figured the cost based on the more expensive connection to be able to not have to raise them when we get better connection. those who downloaded Thunderstorm Creations Sharon Character have found out from the download times what the current connection rate is. ~g~ I think that it was only a minute or so for most to get her. the log said 1000 downloads in 20 hours..though the one person that downloaded her 25 times is a bit strange. ~laughing~ we hosted her on a server here for the first day. it took me only 1/2 a second to download from isp server to my comp..took Stormrage 5 minutes to ftp her up to it, and Stormrage's computer is actually a better computer than mine..she has a p3, i'm only using a p2..hers it at 600Mhz I'm at 233Mhz. the difference comes from the os, I use linux she uses winblows. Cresent, got a spare 4 grand for the account set up? and the 25 grand for a server? that is what we were looking at before a server came looking for me. ~g~ we are setting up a form to build a list of those interested.

I dunno, I sell hosting of 300 MB of space and 8 gigs of transfer, php 4.0/MYSQL, MIVA and shopping carts, ability for Frontpage, CGI and such for $10.00 - $12.00 a month... Nudity allowed - no porn of course. The only other real restricition is no chat rooms allowed either. Full domain support or subdomains allowed. Just as a comparison of pricing to consider for Stormrage, prices for hosting are getting lower and lower while sites are getting larger.

Stormrage and Jacqui make a nice offer, but there are other options out there that should be explored, including LadySilverMage's and geekantics.net. If you go with a hosting service, it's a "pain" sometimes to switch.

We (Geek Antics, Inc.) won't promise "unlimited" bandwidth, because there's really no such thing. No matter what the speed of the connection, there's always goint to be a finite number of bits that can pass during any given amount of time.

We do buy transfer in 400G per month increments, and can resell that at very reasonable prices, see this for details. We've also dedicated 80G per month of transfer to "free stuff" hosting for the 3d commumity (not just hosting customers,) and will continue to put 20% of our resources into that. Hosting clients can also exceed their purchased bandwidth once per year with no additional charge.

Yes, we can do domain registrations (for as little as $10 per year) and can also provide sub-domains from several pre-registered domain names free for hosting clients (will not do sub-directories.) If you already have a domain, you will not need to register it again, but simply point your regestrars to our DNS.

Adult content is allowed, as long as there's no child porn or bestiality. The only real use restrictions we have is NO SPAM, no more than one pop-up add per site, and no "hi-jacked" domain names. If you do that kind of "stuff," we don't want your business.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask (we may use them in our FAQ's. ;)

CHEERS!

For more comparisons, I'm using aletia.com w/200 megs of space and 10 gig transfer for around $8 a month.

I was using nomonthlyfees.com and it was hell. I don't recomend them at all. You may get 500 megs of space but only 5 gig transfer and lousy tech support. They also bait and switch by adding hidden costs once you sign up. They were hell to get away from.

I have my in-laws business site on coastlandtech.com for just $35 a year. It's got 50 megs of space but only 2 gig transfer.

Your package sounds interesting but I'd need to know just how much bandwidth for that price with only 50 megs of space. One thing I noticed while searching for a new host was that the bandwidth is what usually drove a price up. :)

jchimim posted Thu, 25 July 2002 at 3:21 PM

Another thing to look out for (bandwidth related) is the charge if you exceed. I've spoken to a some that go $5 - $10 per gig and/or cut you off if you go over. That's the biggest single cost associated with hosting. Hard drives are dirt cheap. Many hosting companies are also expecting that you will not use as much bandwidth as you are paying for, so they don't like it when graphics folks push the limits.

Any discount for paying a year at a time? Diane

jchimim posted Thu, 25 July 2002 at 8:25 PM

Geek Antics gives a 20% discount for semi-anual payment... What size site are you thinking of? How much of your transfer goes to poser free stuff? Need SSL?

Jaqui posted Thu, 25 July 2002 at 8:49 PM

one year, for the 100 meg site, paid monthly is 192 paid for in advance is 150 we have no charges for heavy bandwidth usage. as the contract with isp doesn't limit the bandwidth, other than the physical cap of the conection. the more expensive account ( for us) offers unlimited bandwith, with the server hooked nine times into an oc12 network / backbone. so physical cap is in the terabyte range, not even if we were hosting rosity, and rosity hosting freestuff would we hit the physical cap of that connection. all our sites will include ssl connection if needed. and remember, our prices are in Canadian dollars, so US and European clients would get a conversion discount of 33 to 50 % in converting to Canadian dollars. that makes the 16 dollar 100 mb site around 12 dollars US
