I would guess that since you obviosly didn't "update" 1.1 to 2, but instead you did a "fresh" install, that for some reason your system isn't recognizing the second install. I agree, weird. On the other point, could you instead of trying to re-name the application, instead re-name an alias of it? With alias' you can re-name them to your hearts content without the error you are reporting. I've also observed this with some other programs. Just like some don't like being moved from their installed folder, while others don't give 2 hoots. S. Jobs in action I guess! ;>
One thing to check is the file exchange control panel. There are prefs there for automatically opening an app. You may even try rebuilding the desktop and resetting the File Exchange file. I am not in 9 so I can't remember exactely what it is called. I had this same problem with Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. -Paul

I noticed this with Carrara 1.1 also, if you rename the application itself, ro anything other than "Carrara", it will refuse to launch and fill your screen briefly with what looks like static. I noticed this when I tried to name Carrara 1.1 to "Carrara 1.1" to distinguish it from C2. Also, doubling clicking Carrara 2 files on my computer launches Carrara 1.1. I'm used to documents launching the newest version of a program in cases where the application TYPE has not changed between versions, but launching the older application...??? This is just weird. -Adam
