Although everyone including me is dreaming of Poser 5 now (finally the Posette in Skirt can sit down, hooray), I was wondering what happened in the past. Since there is Poser 3, 4 and 5 I think there was a Poser 1 too once upon a time. And now I am so curious what this was like and what it was like. DOes anyone have experience and mayber some screenshots to show us... wouldn't it be a nice Fadeback to the past :)

do you really think you could handle the shock? I have a copy of poser1 on a cd somewhere but I'm not too sure I want to install it, it's so old it's predates Metacreations. Rob

In the "P2Lo" character library, the last two figures are the Poser 1 man and Woman. No face morphs, very little detail, 5 preset hand poses ...

I think there was a screen shot yesterday of the p1 man standing next to Mike, you're right Rob it was shocking.

Poser 1.0 was "Fractal Design Poser" a product from the same company that started Painter. I have a copy of it for the Mac, and it was my start with Poser. Seeing Poser 1.0 figures in their native environment is even more shocking that seeing them rendered in Poser 2.0. -Adam

And that sweet interface...

c1rcle posted Thu, 08 August 2002 at 1:45 PM

but if you look past the obvious lack of beauty in the figures you can see even then the program was bigger than what it was designed for, it had something that made people want to use it, now a mere 4 versions later we are about to see what the original designers dreamed of for poser. How many other programs can you think of that advanced so far in so few versions?

Marque posted Thu, 08 August 2002 at 1:49 PM

LOL, I remember those models! I started with Poser 1 and felt lucky that someone thought of the idea. Ok Kupa, give us some side by side shots of the P1 models next to the default P5 models, that ought to show how far they've come. 8^) Marque

Poser has evolved far beyond what its original purpose was, which as far as I'm concerned is a good thing! If anyone has the Poser 4.0 Handbook there is an introduction by Poser's creators about what it was originally intended for. If aren't familiar with the book I'll sum it up to you. Poser was originally designed to be an aide to artists. Remember those little manequins that came in the Ralph Gnaggy artist sets with the chalk and pencils? Well Poser's creator wanted a better stick figure to guide his art work. Poser was originally intended to have it's images imported into Painter so that people could draw over them. Actually if you think about it, you can still use our modern Poser for such purposes; but since I can't draw very well it gives me a way to express myself artistically without having to deal with vector programs or conventional media. Poser grew because people saw applications for it that reached beyond what was originally intended. I'd like one day to go to the movies and see an animated feature that was solely created in Poser--maybe by Version 10 . . .

Shoot, I've got the original Beta Poser 1 on 1.44 floppies! What a goofed up program! Poser really never came of age until Poser 3 and even then with limitations. Poser 4 was amazing and (yes) I'm very interested in Poser 5! Besides my own personal fascination with the program, I can't wait to see what some of the fine artists here at Renderosity are going to create with it!

Poser is used in quite a few movies already, but not the entire thing. Perhaps P5 will be great enough to do it... Actually, I think if you had the time and resources, you could probably do it in 4..at least the characters, and the fact you can add bones to the figures would lend itself to that, I guess... The texturing available now sure rivals Final Fantay, except for maybe the hair. That Jet Li flick used Poser quite a bit in some scenes for layout purposes...couldn't you just keep on going?

I still remember getting Poser One. I think if I remember correctly, I paid $69.00 for it. Then I got Poser 2. I still have them both. For some reason, I never got an upgrade notice for Poser 3 but I did get one for Poser 4 and got it. It seems strange looking back at how far Poser has really came over the last few years..... While I can't wait to get P5, I am still content to putter around with P4 till P5 arrives at my door. Does anyone know if it a stork, good fairy, the Easter Bunny, the Great Pumpkin or Santa Claus that delievers P5 to good little boys and girls? I need to write to the right one...

Way back when, I got Poser 1 illegally. Software is like that, you think you got some kind of deal when you get it free. Next thing you know, its 5 years later, 6 oclock in the morning and youre hooked. You own the program legitimately, youre invested something close to 2 thousand dollars in application specific software/models/ and workarounds, you own the program and check related message boards slavishly. See- Kupa is like a drug dealer. Started us off with a little taste, just for kicks. Then he upped the dose until like coffee you can't wake up without it. He owns us now.

All right, one last time:

Message541676.jpg

I liked the concept of the product so much, I kept the advertisement, and I still have it after all these years.

It amuses me that, even then, people were using Poser to create superhero renders.

Butch posted Thu, 08 August 2002 at 5:06 PM

That's it!!! that's the one that got me hooked, where's my lawer? Boy, talk about a class action suit that will make the tobacco industry look like a kindgarten mup pie contest.......

cybrbeast posted Thu, 08 August 2002 at 6:36 PM

when was Poser 1 released?

Little_Dragon posted Thu, 08 August 2002 at 6:53 PM

1996, I believe. I'm sure that someone around here can give you a precise date.

terminusnord posted Thu, 08 August 2002 at 7:11 PM

Well, that advertisement shows it with a 1994 editor's choice award... Personally I remember playing with it first during my Junior year at college, which spanned 1994-1995. -Adam

I bet P1 man wished he'd never left that planet that was keeping him eternally youthful...

Little_Dragon posted Thu, 08 August 2002 at 8:24 PM

My apologies to everyone (must remember to proofread before I click the Create Message button). You're quite right, of course. It came out about the same time as DOOM 2, which is when I got my first PC.
