Cup made in EI Universe. I have the standard diamond texture on the cup and a .psd file transmapped onto the object face. I want all the reflections from the glass texture but I don't want the reflections from the logo. Anyone have any ideas on how to do that?

brycetech posted Sun, 11 August 2002 at 4:01 AM

  1. render the cup without the logo 2. render the logo 3. render a mask of the logo 4. take it all into photoshop and put it together. :) BT

Hmmm, I've read reference to mask renders before but never did it. I was thinking about just postworking the logo reflection out of the image in photoshop, but the results are often disappointing. Ok, I'll try that. By render the logo, I presume you mean put it on the cup with solid texture (to render faster) then mask it out and layer it in photoshop? And you're saying to mask it in Bryce, with a third render, not masking in Photoshop? Ok. thanks.

just render the logo by itself after rendering the cup full of stuff. after thinking about it, you wont be able to do a mask render of the logo because mask renders ignore transparency so you will have to do the mask in photoshop.

Yeah, I thought it was a PS thing. The angle of the logo would not work well in PS unless I use a bryce image there. That's why I was thinking that a quick render with white cup texture would let me mask the angle etc, in photoshop and invert the mask for alpha channel. Then layer on the glass render. Ok, I can do this postwork. The more I think about it though, the more I wonder if the reflections of the logo add substance to the image. Its just that the real glass has two logos on opposing sides and for some reason, they don't reflect and interact like this render does. I'm almost done with a 9 hour render and will post in a few. (last night's render was disappointing this morning cuz it shifted to parametric instead of object face for some reason and screwed up the logo).

Ok, here's the 9 hour render.

EricofSD posted Sun, 11 August 2002 at 10:18 PM

Looks like half that time to render the glass without the logo, but I'll post itwhen its done.

Got the logo to render in 6 minutes with the cup black in texture. Should be useable for a mask in photoshop. hmmmm, this is interesting.

EricofSD posted Mon, 12 August 2002 at 3:01 AM

Ok, here it is, the cup without the logo rendered in Bryce and the logo layered on the cup in Photoshop. What do you folks think? Logo done postwork or done with all the reflections in Bryce?

big_hoovie posted Mon, 12 August 2002 at 6:16 AM

I think the nine hour render looks better. It looks more interesting. the last render looks to static...too "pasted on", you know what I mean? I like seeing the reflections in the glass, but if you are trying to cut down on them, perhaps you should use the premium render options 'blurry reflections', 'blurry transmissions', and perhaps setting the total internal reflection'TIR' to something low like 2 or so. you should be able to get away with just selecting 'blurry reflections' to cut down on the amount of reflections you are recieving. Eric, Personally I like it. the logo is perhaps a little too solid and could use some (very little) reflection, but if I understand the original thread it's the way you wanted it. Very good!! - TJ

bikermouse posted Mon, 12 August 2002 at 6:34 PM

also according to snells law the angle of incidence(where the light hits the object) is equal to the angle of coincidence(reflection). visualizing your light source xyz I don't think you would see a reflection at the pov of the camera and thus the latter image looks proper. I think that The 'nine hour render' looks unrealistic, but looks nice as well. - TJ

Eric, I apologize, a while back I thought you meant you were modeling objects with Universe, the Starfield program! Why didn't you set me straight? Good stuff, and a great question for Bryce-physics! Have you considered making the texture map of the logo into an actual object? This would let you use the Mask options in the Bryce renderer. I did this with some books a while back, for the gold-leaf cover effects on the bindings...

I really appreciate the comments. Yes, I can make the logo less 2d ish. its still got that masking pixelization and especially in the lines in the butterfly wings. I think its slightly out of place too, which bugs the heck out of me now. Yeah, I'd like something in between, but I want to put a logo on the farside of the cup too and don't want then interacting. As for the TIR, its set at 8. I don't want to go lower cuz I like the glass reflections and really want more if possible. Now that I look at the real cup, I see there's another goof. The inside has 12, not 8 faces. I don't know about making the logo a terrain. its a thought though. Has its advantages. Yeah, its Electric Image Universe 2.9 from the 3dtoolkit that www.dvgarage.com is having a sale on right now. ok, thanks everyone.

Aldaron posted Tue, 13 August 2002 at 8:53 AM

Eric, just a suggestion but you never want to go above 5 for TIR. Bryce only renders up to 6 reflections anyway, after that it just renders black faces where there would be a 7th or higher reflection. Try it with 2 mirrors facing each other, you won't get infinite reflections. Same principle hold for TIR.

Spit posted Tue, 13 August 2002 at 5:25 PM

Bryce 5 can go higher on reflections. Does that logo have an alpha channel? If so use it to drive reflection. You may need to load the logo twice and reverse the alpha on the second load and use that one.

Aldaron posted Tue, 13 August 2002 at 7:56 PM

No Bryce 5 can't. Notice in the picture the 7the reflection is pure black.

Increasing Ray Depth didn't do it? Maybe that was for something else. Oops
