I am wondering how people might do a water spray. splash type deal in Bryce? Such as from a person diving in the water or even from say a whale's blow hole. Thats not as bad as it sounds. lol

Have you tried using a terrain, then duplicating it and subtracting the duplicate from the original. Thats the way I make sprays and splashes. Problem

There are many methods. You can texture a cone object, or use post render techniques. This image started out with some Bryce cone object texture splashes and ended up mostly with postwork. What is not here is the water boolean from the hand making a path in the water.

Problem, can you by chance post a screenshot of the technique you described? I am also interested in learning how to create this effect for a render I am working on.

try using a cluster of metaballs with different volumetric textures that blend more into the water towards the bottom of the splash, and then turn to a mist at the top.
