Subject: converting hig poly poser figures to low

i am new to poser and have been contacted about desinging characters for a computer game. however the figures i designed had a poly count that was to high for the crystal space 3d engine they are using, my question: is there a way to reduce the high poly of 33000 count to a low of 1000-2000 at the most. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Bringing a figure down that far will be a tremendous PITA (if it can even be done :-). You're probably better off just starting over from scratch. It's always easier to increase poly counts as needed rather than take them out after you're done modelling.

There are programs that reduce poly count. While the shareware/freeware version of Metasequoia is non commercial, it does reduce poly count to as low as you want. Maybe you can find a way to get the commercial version. Game models are low poly due to the need for fast response time. They use texture to look as real as they can. i'm sure you know that.

Oh, one more thing, if you want to create your model from scratch, I think Electric Image Universe can make a low poly model just fine. They have a deal going with the dvgarage version and I'm happy with that. The dvgarage deal is a popup screen so don't ignore it. or, www.dvgarage.com

There's that free version of Max, that was made just for low poly models for games. It's going to be included with the next "Unreal" game. Don't remember the name of it, tho... Anyone?

If you are going to convert high-poly models for use in games, contact the creator of the model. You sound like you didn't model it yourself and I'm not sure how the creator would feel about you derezzing their work and then distributing it. I would take the advise given to you before and start over from scratch. It is A LOT of work to derez a figure. If you use a script or program to do it, it will do a sloppy job and that would reflect poorly on you. Then you would have to fix it up, which would take as long as just starting from scratch.

I gotta agree with whattawa. Creating your own is a great way to go. using a program to deres someone else's model is most likely a copyright infringement. Sorry I didn't catch that when I made the suggestion above.

You simply cannot remove 31000 polys from a 33000 poly model, and have it look anything remotely simaler to the original. Frell, that much derez? your lucky if it looks like a box. :) ~EA
