DEM is a supported file format under "import object".

I have a tut up on using the .gz files from USGS. I found the file rename trick to work just fine for those. Brycetech has one also.grissle posted Fri, 06 September 2002 at 6:05 AM

Eric, for some reason, renaming the gz files to dem didn't work for me. But extracting them with WinZip and then adding the dem extension worked allright.
