I have a question perhaps some one can help. I read the manual from CL but I can't find upgrade installation instructions. Do you uninstall P4 first? Install over it? Help please, I would like know so I can preserve my library files in the best way.

You can have 2 seperate installations on your system--Poser 4/ProPack and Poser 5. Poser 5 will not install over nor do you need to uninstall. tori cl

... that (sort of) begs another question ... ... if ya don't mind. ;=] I am assuming that Poser 5 will be installed in the ... (example) C:Program FilesCurious LabsPoser5 (,etc.) folder (subdirectory) Thus, the ... C:Program FilesCurious LabsPoser4 folder would remain intact, no? ;=] The question is: Will Poser5 be able to (automatically) find all of the library items, morph targets, textures, etc., etc. that we currently have in our Poser4 folder ... - or - ... will we have to 'move' (or copy) files over to the Poser5 folder? Thanks for taking the time to respond. cheers, dr geep <------------ gettin' itchy to see P5 firsthand ;=]

Since you can have multiple runtime folders, all you would need to do is point to your Poser 4 runtime folder. At least that is the way I understand it.

Yup, you can leave everything where it is if you want and just switch librarys on the fly.

Poser 5 installs to a different folder than Poser 4 or previous versions. You can keep your existing installations intact (I did this on my own home system). There is no difference between the "upgrade" and "full" versions of Poser 5. People getting the upgrade simply enter a valid Poser 4/Pro Pack/etc. serial number to get the appropriate upgrade price and receive the full box. Once you have P5 intact, simply navigate to your old Poser 4 directory and add your old Runtime folder as a new Library. Guess what: ALL of your existing content will be right there, ready for use! :-) Anthony H. Curious Labs

Or... Copy your existing Runtime folder to a portable/network drive if you want to offload your hard drive. Point Poser 5 to that folder. You're good to go!

Yeaaaaa! Now I can start using my JAZ 2GB drive again ... if it still works! It was pointless for video storage, but Poser stuff, oh yeah. Thanks Tony, and Curious!

But would I HAVE to keep the old P4 (in my case, ProPack) installed, or could I just copy the old Runtime folder into P5 and delete P4 to save on disk space? If P4 is uninstalled, what about the third-party Python scripts that were in P4 that in the root P4 folder. (I assume they would all have to be reinstalled.) Will other programs that currently reside in the Poser 4 root folder (like MIMIC, the Tailor, etc.) have to be re-installed to work in P5 if P4 is removed, or can they just be copied over? I also assume this means that the PBoost utility still has a functional purpose in manageing the old P4 Runtime folder even though it would now be accessed by (or copied into) in P5.

Thank you so much, I got the upgrade since i have p4+pro pack. I'll probably uninstall the main app files first and just save my runtime somewhere else. I wasn't sure of this but I wanted to make sure and avoid a fiasco like I had with b4 & b5. Though I'm not too worried about size...out 0f sixty gigs only 14 are full, and only 1 gig of that my poser runtime. Though I'm sure that'll change. decisions decisions.... oooo I can't wait to try this out. I've got so many ideas....and with morph putty!! I hope my wacom doesn't go to super fast in this program like in P4!

just save your runtime folder and then dump it into the new p5 directory; I expect that'll work. For what it's worth, I've moved my whole p4 folder around on my hard drive without a problem, and renamed it as well (it's called "poserpro" so I can have a non-propack p4 installation separately for testing stuff in). Python scripts should reside in the python dir under runtime so they should be ok too. Keeping both installed only seems like a good idea if you want to do something in p4 that's no longer supported in p5. (nothing comes to mind, but you never know...)

I do NOT recommend dumping your Poser 4 runtime into your Poser 5 directory! You will overwrite all the new stuff.

Roy G posted Fri, 06 September 2002 at 3:33 AM

It sounds like I could burn runtime directories onto CDs. Would that work? Boy I hope so.

timoteo1 posted Fri, 06 September 2002 at 4:03 AM

Sure would! Awesome feature, isn't it?

P5 just sounds better & better all the time :O)

VI_Knight posted Fri, 06 September 2002 at 10:56 AM

Terry, If you uninstall P4 anything not directly related to P4 (e.g. MIMIC and The Tailor) will be left alone and the Poser 4 directory will remain in tact. The Uninstallation will only remove the Poser related files.

Thanks Tony, your post answers my question perfectly.

Having worked in the computer industry for 25+ years, both h/w and s/w, I really stand in awe of what you people (Curious Labs) have done.

Poser6 will probably have those durn characters reaching out of the screen and didling with the keyboard to modify themselves. ;=]

I suspect P5 will keep me occupied for at least 4-5 years because I'm still learning the nuances of P4. Magnets are still somewhat shrouded in mystery. Does anyone know of a good tutorial on the care and feeding (and use) of magnets?

Keep up the superb work!
