"Very badly" is the answer. Just a cut from a photo, paste into the pic. A cheesy dark aura seems to have been obtained from an attempt at anti-aliasing with a black, blurry brush. The landscape isn't bad (the clouds are from a photo too) but it doesn't make up for the dire composition and subject matter. And now somebody's going to say, "Oi! I did that!"... ;)

lol...uh, technically it is done with a 2D program like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Corel Paint, Project Dogwaffle, etc. It is just a cut and paste job. lol...tuttle...tuttle...

deadman67, yeah it's pretty much a rush job, but with some practice and a bit of research you can get good at tasks like that.(better than that) tuttle I want you on my debate team. ;)

Actually, I am guessing that the dark nimbusy thingy around the girl is intentional. It looks to me more like a lapse in judgement than a lack of skill in Photoshop.

I remember one time when a member took a (nude?) pic of his girlfriend, turned it into a terrain, applied the pic again as the terrains texture and posted it. Made it into the hot 20 (of course, lol). What we do to try to impress the girlfriend(s)...

Tuttle ... ROTFL. :-) Nitpick: the aura looks like a drop-shadow applied to a feathered cutout.

I think you guys are missing the point. I get the feeling that this was a deliberate piece of work for maybe an advertisement. Look at it this way: Here we have a moonlit scene, the moonlight reflects nicely off the water, and although the moon should be more BEHIND the clouds the effect is quite pleasing. The girl (I wouldn't jump over her to get to you guys) is positioned so that, although she is the first thing you see, she actually introduces you to the scene behind her. So here's the point...... "Hi! I'm Kathy and I'd like to show you some of the wonderful places we at ABC Holidays can take you to..." But that's just my 2 cents worth.... Regards The Bryster Chris

Here is an old example of an image in Bryce created using the 2D pict plane. The Gnome was painted in PhotoShop with the air brush tool. You need to creat a Alpha channel for the mask, then import it into Bryce. This can be very effective for all sorts of uses. You see it used in lots of backgrounds but it works upclose as well. Great Fun! Cheers!

Looks like drop shadow was turned on when layering the girl on the backdrop.

Deadman, if you don't have Bryce or vue or Poser or any of the 3d apps, you can still have fun like that image you posted by getting the free Terragen and the free Gimp. Terragen creates some realistic looking landscapes (just cruise the terragen gallery here or the terragen forum). Gimp is a freeware paint program that has a lot of options.

Though the girl probably was placed in Photoshop, It's also possible that she was added on a 2D plane and with a poor alpha channel mask. Like what Brendan showed an example of, but with a far inferior mask channel. Whether or not the black aura is intentional or not (it isn't, btw) doesn't really matter because it looks like a mistake. The reason I say it wasn't intentional is because the light on the girl. It was taken with a point and click camera and the flash hit her pretty hard from straight on. Since that's almost certainly the case, it's logical to conclude that the photo was taken at night, possibly even indoors. If you've ever snapped a photo indoors at night with a flash, you'll find that the background is dark -- near black. When the artist encountered the hair the artist probably freaked out and decided an even black fuzz all around is better than a little around her hair. Another reason is the noticably higher jpeg compression on the girl than in the image. Sure, it's possible that different tones and values demanded it, but it looks like poor upsampling to me. Finally, the blur on her arm is plain wrong. Whoever did this doesn't know how to use alpha channels well. As for how it's done, well that's a long tutorial and it involves good photo editor skills. Search the web for tutorials on alpha channels and masks, you'll find a lot of them.
