It's not the stuff that's 404 for a few days or a week. It's the stuff that's been 404 for 6 months.
Let's face it the free stuff it R's best advertisement. That's what got me started here years ago. But if there are pages of dead links the free stuff isn't much fun.
Just my $.02

We attempt to remove "dead link" items of active members. The problems that we face in accomplishing this task are that many members use free web space that limits the amount of bandwidth or downloads in a given time frame, which is usually a 24 hour period. This may appear to many users to be dead links, but in actuality are live links that have exceeded their limits for the given time frame. If you check back frequently you will be able to see that the link will actually work as long as these limits are not exceeded. We are continuing to handle this but if anyone has any suggestions on this, we are all ears. tammy

Couldn't a robot be written to surf through the free stuff once a week and record the 404 links. If an item is continues to be 404 for a couple of months then clear the items out.
