I frequently get a dialog box popping up when I try to save my work in Carrara 2.0 [also 1.1] that says "An unknown error has occurred". I tried multiple times [over several hours] last night to save my work. No go. The only way to quit the program, so I could get to bed, was to tell it to 'not save'. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have. What I found was that if you tell it to "Save as..." instead it will often succesfully save. If not... sorry. Something inside the file is corrupted probably, and if it's saved to a new file, it resets. (I'm TOTALLY guessing here!) Have you tried to send the file to Eovia tech support? Some of them prowl around here, (right charlie?) and maybe they have a better idea. Good luck!

Thanks Bluetone. I did send the same question on to Charlie today. But I think I may have [yet once again] answered my own question. To wit: I frequently, in the midst of a project, do a 'save as' with the same name, just to make sure the latest version of what I'm doing overwrites all others. Carrara apparently does not like that idea. Here's my thinking: last night I lost a lot of work on a model. Today I re-built most all of it. I thoght that last night I had not saved often enough and mayhap the final [RAM]thought was too big. So today I saved frequently by simply doing a CTL_S. The thermometer bar flashed and 'saves' happened. When I wanted to close out, I once again did a 'save as' and got the 'error' message. Figuring that I was screwed once again, I closed with a 'don't save'. But knowing that a simple 'save' had been done merely seconds ago, I re-opened the file. Viola! Nothing was lost. So it seems that a 'save as' can only be done once to establish the identity of the file. After that, you get the 'error' message and a simpl;e 'save' is greyed out in the menu.

Hi, we are about to release a new patch that will hopefully fix that kind of problem. Anyway I would interested to know what you were doing right before Carrara decided to stop saving ? What tools were you using ? Anything in particular ? Maybe that could help us reproduce your problem and thus fix it for good. If you have any idea what caused the problem please email me at charles@eovia.com Thanks Charles

Charles: thanks for the comeback. I was building a cityscape. Lots of cubes, cylinders, and stuff. Lots of re-sizing, rotating, grouping, texturing, et al...but nothing arcane. My reply to bluetone is a pretty good description of the sequence of events. It seems that if you do more than one 'save as' the program kicks you into a loop. First, you get the 'An unknown error has occurred...". Clicking the 'OK' button is your only option. The dialog box goes away, and you can continue to work. But when closing time comes, "Save' is greyed out in the drop-down menu. 'Save As' is the only choice. If you close with an Alt_F4, Carrara asks if you want to save your changes. If you say 'yes', it then tells you again that 'An unknown error has occurred...' Back to Square One. Hope this helps. If you need more details, let me know. Am posting an image of the model.

And one more thing: of late, since I now only do CTL_S saves, the thermometer bar frequently does not flash on the screen. Since [when it does appear] it zips by very quickly, I assumed that I had not looked up soon enough and had simply missed it. But in the last three nights, when I went to close out, Carrara asked me if I wanted to save changes. I said 'yes' and every time I've re-opened, everything was there. But it seems as though even the CTL_S can be a 'sometime thing'
