It's been so dry here in upsate NY that I'm actually looking forward to a weekend of rain, both for the yard and for photography. I would be interested in hearing any experiences people have had with woodland hiking and shooting in the rain. Especially long exposure soft light images. Thanx - ddm

Directional soft light is nice. It was kind of raining for all of my Illinois Railway Museum series in the Gallery. Also, a waterfall last spring, but that has dissapeared from the Gallery.

I LOVE shooting in the rain!
My exposures (shooting Velvia) run anywhere from 10 seconds to several minutes. Things to watch out for - stuff like tree limbs in your foreground if the wind is blowing (unless the motion of the branch is what you're trying to capture), limited "sky" in your composition (it tends to just wash out unless you've got some really interesting clouds, esp. with longer exposures), and of course, the water. The easiest thing I've tried is a cheap shower cap - just snap it over your camera when you're not shooting (I'm assuming you're mounting it on a tripod).
I've put a couple of my "rainy day" shots in the gallery.

Hmmm......well if I know its going to rain I carry a regular old plastic baggie to throw over the camera to protect it... I don't have one of those nice expensive thingies you can buy to protect from water....also I carry a big green garbage bag in my camera bag, this keeps my knees dry when I'm scrunched way down taking pictures of mushrooms or that sort of thing. As far as long exposure and that goes, bring your tripod you will need it, (which I'm sure you knew). I love shooting in wet weather the light is nice and diffuse....and if you have water falls around that would be the best time to try and capture them.
