This image took nearly 11 hours to render Pre Patch. I took a little over 2 hours to render with SP1b. The big difference is in the mirrors. Pre Path it would growl and grind for every bucket full in the mirrors. It still has to work for them, but it's not grinding the hard drive. The Mirror quality is better too. I'm not sure yes if the gain is across the board or just in Mirrors. This image has a lot of reflection. The attached Image is the SP1b version. The gallery image here http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=256233 was rendered in the release version. About 11 hours P4/1.8 512 RDRAM W2K [![ngsmall02.gif](http://www.nerd3d.com/Banners/ngsmall02.gif)](http://www.nerd3d.com)

SP1b? where'd that come from? I thought there was only SP1, what' with the "b"?

Jackson posted Sat, 05 October 2002 at 2:39 PM

Nice pic! Praxis: There were two full patches, I think the 'b' indicates the second one. But I could be wrong.

i agree , the patch speeds up the render ,and reflections/refractions look much better

Correct, If you look at the build number they call the second Patch 5.0.1.241b and the first one 5.0.1.241. It seems logical to call the second patch SR1b. I don't think CL is using this designation, but they released that first patch without testing it and had to immediatly follow up with a second patch. It needs to have a designation because there will be people who only got the first one. ngsmall02.gif

I should mention that the Sci-Fi panel is available in the Freebies here and at my site. (Sorry) it only comes with P4 style textures. Maybe I'll make a P5 version with all the wild textures. The Vicky Texture is by SubTigee and is called Isabella. I'm sure you can guess who made the Chayne Mesh ;-) [![ngsmall02.gif](http://www.nerd3d.com/Banners/ngsmall02.gif)](http://www.nerd3d.com)

Ah hah! I detect a Nerd who's softening towards P5. I tried your idea of converting transmapped hair to clothing and it seems to work well (provided the constrained group is selected carefully). Looks like it'll be a useful standby and is perfect for that toon look....

The reflections are indeed much improved, especially the bits where they reflect transmapped items. I'm glad this was addressed in the first service release. The new render appears smoother than before. Did you change your antialias settings (pixel samples), or is this entirely the result of the patch?

My question is... Why does this image here to be totally ambience? It like there are no shadowing any where. Everything seems to bit lit from just one ambient source destroying any directed light. It kinda looks cartoonish even the bumpmaps ,if used, are barely visable.

Yes, saxon. The patch is more like I expected the program to work. But there still some very seious problems. The face room lasts about 15 seconds before "Caught C exception..", even after the patch. Exactly the same render setrtings as the release version of the renderer Little_Dragon. So, yes it is all patch. Especially notice the procedural textures in the reflections. (The glowing Pipes) wgreelee1, The intent here was for an ambient look to the light. The celing glows orange, light comes from all the plasma conduits behind, and the control panels. Even the glowing fog below is represented with an infinite light. None of these cast shadows, because (Atleast in the release version of the render) the Cast Shadows check box on props doesn't seem to work for raytraced shadows. Taking the check off leaves these items casting shadows. Makes it a little rough to light a room using raytraced shadows. I'll have to test this with the patch later. ngsmall02.gif

RATS! There is a real problem with raytraced shadows and mirrors. I hope I'm doing something wrong. [![ngsmall02.gif](http://www.nerd3d.com/Banners/ngsmall02.gif)](http://www.nerd3d.com)
