LOL, sorry if late for the challenge, been busy and making the textures/uploading them is a bit of a chore (have to use dial up for upload, ouch!) Glad ye like them :))

Dial-up is a pain, but better than no connection at all shudder. I'm glad you didn't put these up in the middle of the challenge, some people might have felt short-changed. Lin

No offense intended Silverblade33, I think it's great when artists give away some of their hard work. It's a nice way to give something back to the community...BUT. I am always confused by people who want to give away the same things other people are selling. It constantly amazes me that someone would spend thousands of dollars on a computer and the software and then just give away the fruits of that investment. For example, I bought the same $20 LunarCell plug-in for my expensive copy of Photoshop from flamingpear.com. I used mine to create product for the Marketplace, paying for the plug-in after a few sales. They don't see huge sales, but a few a month makes me happy. Now you come along...and no offense again, but you are giving away the same thing I am selling. It's nice that you are so generous, but basically you just killed off any future sales of my product. I mean freebies have their place, but not at the expense of merchants. It makes it very hard for us to create and provide quality items for the marketplace when they are constantly being knocked off and given away for free in "white warez" fashion. I think that once the bandwidth charges catch up with your generosity you may decide that giving away so many items costs you too much. From my personal experience, everytime I've put up a freebie it's ended up costing me money in bandwidth overuse. Just not worth it for me to pay for other people's software. Again Silverblade, I'm not scolding, and I'm not angry. I'm just expressing my feelings on the subject. Give away whatever you like and God bless you. Peace.

silverblade33 posted Wed, 09 October 2002 at 11:33 AM

Alleycat, 1) My items aint the same as yours, I havent taken the time to individually edit each map, especially the bump map which could do with more work I feel (mine I mean). they are limited in number and type, so folks can see yours and chose ot buy because mine may not have what they are looking for. I'm real sorry if it causes you any problems :/ 2) In general, I'm pretty gawd damn disgusted by the blatant RIP OFF prices of software applications. Every other field's prices, in real terms have come down or have plummeted, compare quality of a PC now compared to 10 years aog and price. Oh and I do own, legitmately, Bryce, Rhino, Lunar Cell and a lot of other things. But look at the prices of apps, I mean, come on that IS A RIP OFF! At least when regarding sales to "private individuals" rather than companies. if a product is not custom designed to order, does not have an extremely small user base, but can be used by ordinary folk on ordinary PCs it shouldn't cost more than one or two weeks wages MAXIMUM. 90% of software producers costs goes on development, but marketing and distribution are a dream, most expensive part of what you actually phycially recieve is the manual. And as broadband becomes better more prevalent, eventually many programs will be download only, that would help with security and reduce costs. In normal consumer relations, governments actively crack down on price rigging and restrictive trade practices...See that happening to software, hm? Long since time protests were organized, as they have been in regards to dubious pricing arrangements elsewhere. Some of that has started to sink into the "corporate mentality", and price reductions and product restructuring are slowly taking place. Other things like EULA's are also being looked at. Sorry, I'm jsut pretty damn annoyed at the rampant greed and stupidity that has become the accepted norms and the standard for morality nowadays sigh. making a profit from your labours is fine, but for goodness sake why can't people SHARE more, for sheer decency of it? 3) To make a living or return for your investment, as you did, is perfectly reasonable. But I just look at my creations as "art", they are for enjoyment and betterment of whoever sees or uses them. But there's a difference between personal use for pleasure, and for profit. I wouldnt be happy if folk used items I made for making MONEY without asking me first. Despite my previous statements grin, I don't think it's right to make profit off osmeone else without their consent. 4) whats "White warez"? 5) I learned a ton of stuff for free, was given lots of free textures and models and help, this is my way of returning that kindness :)

I wasn't implying that you are giving away identical product to what I am selling, but it is very similar. I respect your right to do so, but I can't really be happy about it. Like I said though, I wasn't trying to get rich from them and they weren't exactly flying off the shelves. It's not like you've killed off my livelyhood or anything, I'm just making a point basically. Regarding software prices, I agree they are high...but when you factor in the relatively small market share, the R&D costs, distribution, stocking, advertising, overhead, piracy, etc... you can see why they are. Software, like music and video, can be easily duplicated and redistributed for pennies on the dollar. This is the problem with selling digital medium...virtually anyone can make unlimited copies of one disc at little or no cost to themselves. Let's say that everyone who buys a legal copy of Photoshop, then turns around and GIVES it to one other person. That's 50% of Adobe's profit out the window every time they make a sale. Imagine if you could buy a Mercedes, drive it into your garage and five minutes later drive an exact copy out the door...now imagine doing that every five minutes until all your friends had a Mercedes too. Pretty soon Mercedes will either be out of business or coming after you with lawyers. That's what software piracy is like...it's a license to print money, but at someone elses expense. That's why prices are so high. Sharing is fine, but sharing someone else's work without their consent is not, as you said. I look at all my computers and software as investments. I do lots of things for my own enjoyment and artistic expression as well, but it is very satisfying to be able to use the gear to help pay for itself. You made a good point about not wanting other people to make money off your work without your consent. I hope that you include a license agreement with your freebies that implies payment for commercial use? In that sense they are only free until you want to use them to make money. "White Warez" is a term I just made up to describe well intentioned freebies that are very similar to items for sale. Kind of like how Greenpeace is called "white terrorism"...well intentioned, but not always right. It's just an expression, not an accusation. I agree that free stuff is great, I download it all the time...In some ways though I'd rather just pay people up front for their efforts. That way if someone wants to buy something I made with it I don't have to worry about credits and long lost Read Me files with artists names on them. Sometimes it's just cheaper to buy than to have to deal with hurt feelings, threats and/or lawsuits down the line because you forgot to credit or pay someone you got a free model from ten years ago. I've given away lots of free stuff...and free advice and support as well. It just ended up costing me too much so I stopped doing it.

CRAP! just lost my entire post... grrrr. The jist of it is this.... Alleycat, Silver, I feel for the both of you and know exactly where you're coming from. I intend when I set up my own website to offer up both free and for sale work. It's about control to me. If I want to have control, I'll charge for it, if I don't, I'll offer it for free and let whomever do whattever with it except redistribute it for a profit. Sell the art you make with it, that's what it's there for. I get the pleasure then of seeing a creation of mine in (hopefully) great art. Being a web designer, I have felt the sting of cousin Timmie stealing accounts, embittering businesses towards the whole internet and taking money from my pocket. I also understand that almost all web designers have to start out as a cousin Timmie though. It's almost a rite of passage. Oh well, till there becomes an organization like the AMA or Teamsters for web design, this will continue. LOL designing without a license... what a concept. The software industry seems to have a collective disdane for the private individual, books, software and other items related to computers have been deliberately priced out of John Q. Public's reach because they don't want to deal with them. They want the professional consumer and corporate buyer who'll buy in groups of 10 site licenses 100 books or more. Also, they'll pay the outrageous prices so their profit margines will retain their %40 growth rate or higher to keep their shareholders happy. They truely want to eliminate pirates? Simple, drop all software prices below $100 per unit. Personally I don't buy a DVD or videogame if it costs more than 20 bucks. Why bother? Wait for it on sale or borrow it from a friend. If they really wanted my money, they'd price accordingly. They are creating their own problem and are screaming like a monkey with it's hand caught in the jar holding the grapes. Well that's my 50 bucks worth....

Thanks for the models and mats, man....love those ships and I'm working on a scene with them (and managed to get a whole fleet in there this time). The only difference between buying something and getting it for free....if it is free I have no right to bitch about it, but if I payed for it I'll raise the roof. As it stands, Alleycat probobly won't loose many sales over this, if any. I'm not going to go out and buy anything from the marketplace here or elsewhere unless: A:I think it is just awesome and gotta have it AND it is rediculously cheap ( the mil dragon from daz comes to mind). B:I'm going to get paid for the resulting image and I need it for that image, and I can't make it myself or find it for free without commercial restrictions. If software were less expensive, there would be alot less warez going on. If warez were less common, software would be alot cheaper. Kinda sad....

Ack sorry if it isn't working!! :/ hard to re-upload stuff as have to upload via dial up and they are BIG files (dial up is pay per minute, but my cable is un-metred). Will try to upload today, however the READ me file in EACh texture should explain it ;) yeah the whole damn problem is over pricing an easily copyable item, an item with ludicrously low distribution/manufacturing costs is silly. Al artistic materials cost, go buy some paints that use expensive metals or even semi-preciosu gemstones, but there IS a limit
