You can also get around this by creating a file with a bunch of shaders in it, then loaading the folder into the browser temporarily. I set up a folder with some custom metal and wood shaders that I created for a client. (Also some special models, for the model tray.) Whenever I do another job for them I just load their folder into the browser tray, and start modeling.
I've never really suffered this issue too much and it's difficult to tell which things impact performance sometimes. I suspect that you can turn off the preview in the browser tray and that should fix up a lot of the problems right off the bat. For me, when I have more shaders in a folder than I can practically manage on my screen, I then decide which ones to dump to CD Archive and which ones to keep. I don't like too much stuff floating around and I create a LOT of bits and pieces of stuff with Carrara. -Kix

I was just browsing through the manual and I read that too many custom shaders in the browser tray will slow down system performance. I kind of figured that anyway but was just wondering how many custom shaders does anyone keep in their browser tray? How many would it take to start causing slowdowns on a moderately powerful computer? just curious. memaci
