This ties into Chuck's post Thoughts of a Book, but I came up with my idea before I saw his post. (So, there!) ;-) Personally, I'm pretty run down from work right now - a bit physically, but mostly mentally and emotionally. It's hard to motivate myself to do anything creative right now. I'm sure everyone hits this "couch potatodom" stage at times. How do you fight it? What's your secrets for picking up that pen, for plunking away at the keyboard?

Well, let's see. What motivates me to write? Contests in this forum. Challenges in this forum. Replying to messages in this forum. (hmmm, common thread here?) Oh, and my website...not updated for some time now. Ok, so I started off with a bit of humor. But I'm not a writer...LOL

Urge. I get this urge to write. This is probably the worst way to try to be a writer, but if I try to write at any other time either nothing comes out or the ideas/content are not good. But when I do write, I tend to write up a storm :). Well... a small one anyway lol

Don't they have a word for a small storm? Tempest?

LOL Never thought of it that way before.

I'm kind of like Bella, I just get an undeniable urge. Though I can make myself write if need be if the urge is not there. But there will be long periods when I feel uninspired and just dabble, firing up the word processor for ten minutes, staring at it, and then shutting it down. At times like these I can be distracted form the task at hand by nearly anything. If I really need to write during these periods, I can, just by sitting down and doing it. And if it goes well, that in itself can get me into the mood and the funk passes. However, if the urge grabs me, then I pretty much can't do anything else, to the point I'll find myself up at 2:30 am on a work night. Not great for work, but the pages sure fly by. ;-) And there are some things I can do to help me get the urge. So if I feel the need I will do one of them. For example, I usually feel the urge after attending a Science Fiction convention, where I attend panel discussions on the act and art of writing or getting published. Also, long hikes in the woods, Autumn in general, or new environmental experiences (such as seeing a desert oasis for the first time) give me the urge. jon
