With all this UV mapping going on should people not be looking towards the D.T.E is seems to me one of the most powerful parts of bryce. What do people think?

I agree the DTE is very powerful but it's also pretty difficult to get a handle on it. I'm about in the middle of the chapter in "Real World Bryce" and learning something every minute. With the DTE you should be able to create almost any material you wish. But it doesn't help in placing things like decals, etc.

true enough - I'm just a bit concerned about people using jpegs willy nilly

nothing against jpegs some of my besy friends are jpegs indeed I'm out to lunch with two this very day - It will be nice to get back to Aunty procedural though!!

Procedural works just fine for SOME things. For others, it just won't work at all. Using both, as appropriate, is the way to go.

I agree with Allen9. I am texturing my chinese junk and am finding that each method has its own appropriate uses. Having said that I still have to say that the dte is one tough nut to crack. I have Real World Bryce 4 and every incursion into the dte that I make ends up being a 6 to 8 hour mind numbing experience with me ending it just as confused as when I started.

I found a tutorial by jba on disrupted fractals that uses the DTE to produce the effect, it makes the DTE less intimadating, and fun actually. Also helped me understand what happens when the different channels are used together to produce an image, a couple of my gallery entries used the DTE exclusively....if anyone's interested...
