Never have the right lens at the right time! Visited Horicon Marsh near my old home town during the first week in October. Was really hoping to get a couple more spider web shots like last year. Not a spider to be seen! But these wedges of birds kept coming out of the fog, which I largely ignored. If you've seen one goose, you've essentually seen a million. But then sort of noticed that they were not making goose noises, and were flying kind of strangely. Turns out they were American White Pelicans. Then, looking at the scans tonight, I find some sort of white egret waiting on the water. http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/caer/ce/eek/critter/bird/pelican.htm

I thought pelicans only lived by the ocean or near the intercostal waterways. Somehow they just seem out of place in Wisconsin of all places! Good shot.

Misha: Yes, I was shocked to see the pelicans this past year myself out on the marsh. They tell me that the pelicans are returning after approximately a 100 year absence. There are about 35 that habitat the marsh at present. And what a riot to watch, they remind me of a good cartoon. I am posting 3 photos to sort of portray how they acted. This one here is a group of 4 that flew in.

And this one here is how they would swim behind the others, all the while bobbin' their heads back and forth in time to a song only they could hear. It was really an experience to watch. I am glad you got to see them, also. (I know these are not the sharpest photos, the lense I used was a bit heavy for the tripod I have. (Oh, Santa, may I have a heavy duty tri pod for Christmas, I've been really good).
