I love explosions, here is one I recently finished. It uses two of my extensions, spherical gradient and noise deformer, if anyone wants a more detailed explanation of how it was done, just ask. Please post comments, questions, or links to your own explosions. Brian P. Retford Carrara Extensions www.losthorizonsoftware.comaeryk71 posted Thu, 06 April 2000 at 6:16 PM

The explosion looks great -- especially the colors in it. I wonder if there's a way to make it less spherical, though.... Because it's so perfectly round, it does look a bit CGI.... Could you use the same process on some kind of deforming or morphing meatball? I'd also think about some kind of particles eminating from the explosion to simulate the sparks (burning iron filings) that pyrotecnicians use in RW explosions. I don't have Carrara, but you've inspired me to try new things in RD3D.....

That's really quite good. But as I've said elsewhere, what we desperately need for the particles system are features like sprites and geometry instancing. Either or both would help explosions (and a lot of other things) to not always look like it's entirely built of triangles...which it is. I've been spoiled by Maya and Dynamation, and I keep feeling like Carrara is soooo close to having a good setup... it just needs that extra third party push from a good programmer...

Here here, Sprites is a great idea, and it will probably prove easy to implement (I'm going to try this weekend), object instancing would require access to the source code of Carrara, or a new, custom particle engine (might not be such a bad thing) I'll keep everyone informed of the sprite thing.
