I have some questions about carrara; first of all, my actual computer does not meet the system requirement spified by macrtion, (this is my computer configuration): amd k6 266mhz, 64meg ram, voodoo 3 2000 16meg pci, i project to buy a new one next year but now i am hurry to use carrara, and i wonder if carrara will run in my prent configuration. I can not imagine that the software won't work on my prent pc, because many 3d software work on my pc especially those who have software engine spial for fast rendering, i can expect the animation to be slower than 60 frames/s, but the rendering should be faster than bryce, because macrtion announce carrara is 10 time faster than bryce. Anyway can you tell me what i can expect of carrara with my configuration? Also will carrara take advantage of my voodoo 3 2000? If not what graphic card do you recommend? Do you recommend standard range or 3d graphic card or professional range like 3dlab oxygen and higher nb: i am a french speaking person so try to use easy-to-understand words and sentence. thank for your collaboration. from a canadian friend.

josiane - Welcome to the forum. I run on a PII 400Mhz with 256mb RAM. I personaly havent tried it on a slower system. I think a fw of the forum regulars have slow systems than I and less RAM. Lets see if they reply. I have heard of it running pretty well on a PII 300 Mhz system. It will probably run but it may run slowly for you. Regards, Clint

the minimum system requirement spified by macrtion is: pentium 11 300mhz 64mg ram 8mg graphic card, (accelerator graphic card is optionnel) my configuration is: amd k6 266mhz 64mg ram voodoo 3 2000 pci 16mg the only difference is i have 34 mhz less on my processor, but i have a good graphic card better than the system ruirement, i think it would be only slower, but i am not a programmer i don't know if the software is able to decte that i have not 300mhz processor and that is is not a pentium but amd k6. I don't want to risk buying it and than it refuse to be instaled. does somebody have tried to installed it in amd 266mhz. I am asking this question because macrtion does not provide any do.

I ran it on a k6 233, 64 mb ram and it ran great but very slow. Also it is a real memory hog and so 64 ram won't last very long. Anyways, to answer your question it will run just fine. P.S. I just got my Athlon 600 :)

thank you CBeckstrand! is it right to say that to upgrade only the memory for now, until i have me too an athlon will be sufficient? :) :) also when you had your k6 233, did you experiment more bugs due to the fact that your system was slower than the system requirement, because we heard carrara has many bugs that were in part corrected by the patch. what do you mean by very slow, slow like bryce, ( it take 6 hour to render a scene whit my computer) me i wanted to buy carrara because they say it is quicker than bryce. we do not know what kind of graphic card you had, because the graphic memory and 3d accelerator can make all the difference. another point: recently i try the do of strata studio pro, (the main compitor of carrara) and the rendering was very fast, like 20 time faster than bryce. i also tryed many ather 3d software and i notice that the rapidity of the rendering is not only proportional to the power of the computer but also dependent upon the power of the software engine, and it's capability of managing opengl and 3d acceleration, and many other variables. So can you develop on the kind af graphic card you had, and if you experiment(ed) bugs whith carrara? thank you:)

I didn't have an graphics card so that was probably the main reason it was so slow for me. I played with it a little but it loaded so slow and everthing that I didn't use it to much. As far as bugs go I didn't really find any but like I said I didn't play with it much. Is seemed very stable but without a graphics card and my lack of memory it was hard to really use. The rendering did seem faster than Bryce and a lot cleaner. I would get more memory, especialy since it's so inexpensive right now, and go for it. It really is a awesome app if I can ever figure out how to use it. :)

By the way, my Athlon system only cost me about $1000 with all awesome components. So my advice is to upgrade you computer for the next year as you can afford but use components you can use in your new setup. For example if you plan on upgradeing you memory get yourself some PC133. It will cost you maybe 15 bucks more but when you buy your new computer you can still use it. Just a thought. Hope I'm easy to understand. I know I can't spell. :)

Hi all .... In referrence to Athlon with Carrara. Is there any compatibility problems? Does this app runs better and faster on an Intel architecture platform?

Dual PII 400 Oxygen VX1 32meg version 256 mbram IBM 7200 rpm ATA66 drives all for under $2000 when I bought the system in 1998. I must say this, and that is if you are as serious as I am when it comes to 3D art then a dual processor with the right components can be a valuble tool without a doubt and the prices are good for parts these days. I am using an Asus P2BD mb and it only cost $350 at the time. I am sure you can get it for less now and I can push it up to a dual 600. As for my results, well lightwave has maxed out at about 738 and 3D studio max only benched 577. but I just got a bench on carrara and it is running at a WOPPING 798! It FLIES through carrara even when doing heavier crunching. It is just something to consider. Not to mention running a more elite operation system like NT. 98 does not take advantage of Dual processors and the Oxygen boards are VERY GOOD boards to have if you are into 3D art. They don't have the fill rate of a voodoo 3 but they have the features as you would expect from any pro CAD video board. So consider that.

I'm running Carrara on a system below the recommendations: PII 266, 128 RAM, Viper 330. Runs very well, slow only with huge files.

My computer has 32 megs of ram, and is just a Pentium, and it runs fine. Slow, but it runs. Faster than Poser and Bryce at least. :)
