I again dug out the mushroom field guide, but this is getting really hard! I'm guessing the second one on the underside is covered with small white pores, maybe 4 to 6 per mm. This would make it one of the Polypore family, perhaps an "Artist's Conk," Ganoderma applanatum. If so, the white pore surface bruises easily, and a detailed drawing can be etched into the serface that on drying will remain permanent. Then again, it could be something entirely different. I can't find anything in the book that looks like the first ones, though I've seen plenty of them around in the wild, so they must be quite common. Maybe they are just haven't grown up enough yet to have their picture in the book.

No 1 image needs a bit more contrast to highlight the fungi. Pretty, you bet! Bill

Thank you MISHA....I am not a fungus expert.. I call the little ones elf ears ...and the bif ones, like up high in the birch..........elephant ears. The large fungus looks absolutely rubbery as I looked from the ground to seven or so feet over head. Some of the little elf ears definitely are cute...i get a tingle when i find a pretty one and pluck it free as they look like the ears of the woods.PPsphere posted Fri, 15 November 2002 at 9:32 AM

one more shot still too washed out from all the white of the "ears" to be a really good shotMisha883 posted Fri, 15 November 2002 at 5:50 PM
Definitely a polypore, though still can't match the picture in the book exactly. The concentric rings are characteristic. I'm thinking something like a "Flecked-flesh Polyphore" Phellinus igniarius. There are a lot ov versions that look like this, and I like your "Elf-ear" name best of all. I'm no expert at this, but used to have a wonderful biology teacher, who could walk through the woods for hours, naming everything and telling interesting stories.

Interesting compositions. They all seem to lack a little density though. Can you tell us what gear you are using and how you made these exposures?
