Well, so a french friend of mine tries to load my model (I sent him obj and cr2) on his Mac... he has the french Poser, but that doesnt seem to be the problem. Obj file is okay (how couldnt it?) but when he opens the figures tab, he gets no "shrugging grey handy figure", he gets nothing. The cr2s are absolutely the same (except for the known CR/LF differnece - is that it ?). And YES, the cr2 sits at exactly the right place in the libraries. We tried it all... Christ ! Thanks :)

The last one I remember was 60387, so I probably missed some... :-) OK, I guess you are on PC and your friend is Mac? There are two things to look for: 1) If the .cr2 doesn't show, it is probably just not correctly typed. The easiest way to do so will be to use Maconverter. 2) The PC thumbnail sits in the .rsr file (the one that is in your .cr2 library folder, not the one in your Geometries). In order to get this as well you must send it with the .cr2, and your friend must drag all of the files onto Maconverter. My tools are on FunStuff, or get it directly from http://www.main-rheiner.de/homepage/soft.rabbit

Hey Martin - sure. That cr2 is correctly typed. meaning it doesnt have any typos (that would also stall my PC) - and it works here. Now I didnt expect any thumbnail to show on his machine - but the shrugging figure that shows on the PC WHEN you have both cr2 and obj at the right place BUT no rsr. See what I mean ? Stuff is tested, but he gets nothing ? He also keeps telling me Macconverter wouldnt touch any library files - that is why I am trying to solve this problem anyway. I cant really check on this right now as Microsofts new MacEmulator TM is still a buggy beta :) So I thought before I told him he was completely wrong... Do you want to check the file maybe ? Thanx, Pete

Sorry for a misunderstanding - "typing" doesn't mean spelling the name, it means setting the file type for Mac. Maconverter does touch library files, and it will setup the Finder information for Poser (I can't think of any other reason why the file refuses to show at all). Unless this is done, Poser will ignore the file, it is a bit stubborn in this respect - so you should somehow persuade your friend to use Maconverter with it, or there will be no progress... :-)

Hey, that sounds okay to me - he also said that if he clicks the file on his desktop or whatever, Mac tries to open it as a text file - which also works (he can read it :) ... so right now I guess he isnt using Macconverter the right way, huh ? Ill write him - thanks again. But just out of interest - what the heck has to be changed in the cr2 then ? I fired up a Mac cr2 in my PC and no problem, it also laoded the geometry - french version or not. Where does the apple drop - I use a PC because I burned my fingers with the Amiga (remember)... thats the reason why I became a bit religious about compatibility... BTW if you should one day want to email me, my old one wont work - Im at 21stcentury@teleline.es Next and maybe final question - is it okay if I pass on Macconverter to other people or do I have to tell them to download it there and there ? And where ? Cheerio, Pete.

As far as your current problems go, there is nothing to be changed in the .cr2 itself, and that's why you can't do it on your PC. The Mac stores information about both the file type (format) and the creator of any document independent of its name - similar to your PC keeping track of creation dates outside of the real file content. Because there is no such information within the PC file system, I can't write Maconverter for PC, and you can't modify the .cr2 as long as it is on your PC disk. Apart from this, there are significant differences in the way how Poser remembers textures. This caused crashs in Poser3 days (and Maconverter has an option to remove it), but it is now handled much better in my separate Macinstaller tool, which is able to fix it (as well as some more magic tricks...). Anyway, this has nothing to do with your recent problems. I currently allow to pass on my tool personally, so whenever you know someone specific who urgently needs it, you are allowed to send him/her a copy - but people are not allowed to put it on their website for anonymious download, or to distribute it by CD/whatever. Nevertheless, it's probably best to simply pass on my homepage, this way people will also get the newest version whenever they need it: http://www.main-rheiner.de/homepage/soft.rabbit Cheers, MartinC

Aha - I recall the ".info" files the Amiga creates an PC users dont know what to do with... I used to torture Wintel users by sending them gif files with the ending ".jpg"...:) Okay, that should be it then. Please keep up the good work - I will pass on your site link. I was asking about passing it on because i had bad experiences with broken links especially to smaller private pages. BTW do you have some good documentation ? I hope so. I read only good remarks about your soft at the forums, but apparantly there are people who have trouble handling it - will tell them to download the latest vesrion - thx again, Pete.

My site should be quite permanent ('hope so), but if it ever changes there would be a big anouncement here & at PFO. As long as site regulations and technical access possibilities are unchanged (Hi fur, I'm still not amused about the lost control over my e-mail address... :-) they will be on FunStuff(s) as well. I do have a documentation (of course), which I hope covers all the basics and a bit more... but I can hardly judge myself if it is good (enough) for newbies. However, the typical usage of Maconverter is to drag the complete PC folder into its window and then hit a button labelled "Convert" - at least this deals with 99.9% of all stuff I ever encountered myself. PS: Let me know when 60393 pops up... :-)

Hi Martin - there it is. Apparently I sent my friend a whole lotta figures and some of them load while others wont - converter or not. They all work okay on the PC... I think we should find the reason. There isnt anything exotic about the cr2s either... my friend uses a Mac with 400 mb ram and the latest Os, all okay. Can I send you a CD ? This might be interesting - last horizon maybe. Cheers, Pete (Happy Easter:(

There are many things to try first... First of all, what exactly happens - crash? error box? missing textures? The most likely source of problems is lack of memory - Poser makes very little use of temp memory, so it needs a very huge memory partition of its own. It initially ships with a 67 MB one (which is much to small for the real world), and the 4.0.2.118 patch might have set it back. Tell you friend to: - select the Poser icon - chose "Get Info" - select the "Memory" popup - check the bottom entry If it says anything like 67.000, set it to 300.000 and try again. There is a very good chance that it will work then (he can make it a bit smaller again later if he wants). If this doesn't solve it, it might be a good idea if he could contact me directly - my e-mail is in the docs (and there is a lot more to try). Cheers, MartinC

I just realized that you friend is french, so I guess he isn't using the US 4.0.2 ?? Nevertheless, do check the memory partition!

matlock posted Sun, 23 April 2000 at 8:14 AM

Hi thanks - no THIS guy isnt french, hes british. he has almost 400 mbs of ram... some of the models are of course a bit bulkier than others, so I had also started thinking of that... "poser suggests a memory problem when an obj cannot be opened which is stupid because my mac is very powerful with lots of ram allocated to poser application" - his words. But it DOES suggest a... Ill be back :)
