I'm thinking about getting a laptop computer. Has anyone out there tried using Photoshop with one? Some of them have excellent graphics and hard drive storage and etc now. Just wondering!

laptop monitors suck, every last one of them, but yeah, PS runs fine on'em, same as it would on a desktop pretty much, girlfriend runs it on one... except that all laptop screens suck. If you're working primarily for print based projects, make sure your final file is run through a calibrated desktop monitor before printing.

I do most of my stuff on a laptop and it works ok. It makes colour choices interesting but also a challenge! I use my PS 5 mostly as the PS 7 that I have freezes the laptop solid when I make a lot of changes in a short period of time when using the brsuh tools. I have no idea why, but PS5 works fine, so I just use that and then swap to PS7 if I have to use some special feature/filter. Have a look! ---> http://www.renderosity.com/gallery.ez?ByArtist=Yes&Artist=SeanECindy5663 posted Fri, 29 November 2002 at 7:12 PM
Thanks Slynky and SeanE. Sean, could you tell me what kind of Laptop you're using and all the gory details? I ask because I know that there are new laptops out there that go beyond what my own desktop is capable of - you know, more memory, cpu and motherboard capabilities, more graphics capability, etc.... BTW - Sean I love the colors in your pics - they're great. Thanks again both of you, Cindy

Acer Travelmate 529atx laptop => 700Mhz, 20Gb HDD, 256RAM, 56 Modem, FDD, CD-ROM running winXP-pro. All provided by my work so I don't get much say in the setup overall... and thanx for the look/see on my gallery. Like I said ps5 works fine and does pretty much all I need anyway. Gotta new one there now too.JVRenderer posted Sat, 30 November 2002 at 6:23 PM

Your OS and RAM will definitely make a difference here. Also a large Hard Drive will help. If possible, partition the Hard Drive to allow for multiple disks you can use for Photoshop Scratch Disks. I've been using Photoshop 6 (now 7 but haven't used it much yet) while I'm on the road with my laptop (PIII 600, 192mb RAM, was 6GB HD but upped it recently to 40GB HDD with the partitions I'm talking about). It's been working fine for me even for print stuff, though mostly I am doing screen res stuff. I wouldn't go to Win XP on my system because it is too RAM intensive and my RAM is maxed out. One key thing with Photoshop is to make sure you have plenty of RAM and the extra partitions for Scratch disks will help too. I would recommend no less than 512mb RAM and would definitely go to 1gb or higher if possible - especially if you are considering running Win XP. Otherwise you're ok with less RAM if you're running a lighter OS like Win 2000 or Win 98 (though I would recommend Win 2000 over Win 98 any day). Other than that, the issue with color fidelity is the only one I can see potentially getting in your way on a laptop and, as others have pointed out, there are workarounds for that as well (like doing a final check on a CRT before going to print). Good luck with it. Frank

I use PS7 on a Titanium running OS X with no problems at all.I have 256MB Ram and a 30 GB HD running on a 667 G4 processor. I would suggest as recomended above using another monitor. to view the final before printing. Even with the new monitor on the Titanium there is a large margin for error. Ezra

im using ps7 on my g3 powerbook, almost no problems, but the moniter is.... iffy, at best. if you look at my homepage, only laptop screens can actually view it, but if you import it into a graphics editor and make it brighter, it looks more washed out, but you CAN see it. you can prolly do a perfect conversion, but i've been too busy/lazy to try it.
