This is a greyscale image representing a terrain elevation map, paired with another image of colors that match height and slope and other criteria. Created in Project Dogwaffle, used in numerous renders, usable in other tools that can use an image to render a terrain (even if not able to endlessly tile it). The free version of PD Howler has that capability in the Puppy Ray transform filter (a path tracer). I place this into category of 3D models, even though the two images are simply Jpeg images. The 3D model is the 3D terrain you can reconstructur for it in many tools, even Photoshop, and 3D Builder (Windows 10), and Bryce, Carrara and other popular tools.

Hi all, we have come a long way with PD Howler / Project Dogwaffle (including PD Artist). We now also can load 3D models. The terrain modeler Filter (3D-Designer) already had options to export the terrain surface as .obj file (with .mtl for materials if you wanted it), in addition to saving the greyscale elevation map and colored texture map as shown here above. Now you can also load your own 3D model in .obj file (others perhaps in the future). NASA has plenty of 3D models in OBJ format and some in STL or Lightwave and also now Blender. Simply grab a .blend file from there and save back as OBJ, and the triangles and quads will load in most cases we've seen so far. Should we offer Howler on Renderosity?

Thank you. The combination of 'Elev' and 'Terrain' maps is very useful. Applying 'Elev' as 'super-displacement' to eg a low-poly Poser base-plate gives a 3D landscape, over which the 'terrain' pic may be draped. FWIW, easy enough to go from 'Terrain' to 'Elev' by invoking grey-scale in eg Irfan View, but no easy way to predictably 'posterise', contourise, 'layer-cake' or stratify an 'Elev' to apply terrain textures. Will investigate PD Artist...

Not sure why you can't see a Save Image As... option in your browser. Could be the viewer script or web page code. If you can see it, just do a screen capture from it. Or grab same and similar at www.thebest3d.com/landscapes There's a new tutorial for lunar landscapes too with samples, starting from a cup of coffee with frothed milk looking like impact craters. Interesting question regarding the Sims3 builder. No idea. Can it load any images as greyscale elevation map? Then the answer is probably yes. Where do you find a free trial of that Sims app?

I've been trying since yesterday, but this won't download

Do you have any idea if these would work in SIMS3 Create A World (CAW)?

you're welcome. I hope it's useful. We're building other elevation maps and hope top post more here. If you have a special need such as canyonlands or alpine mountains or other special landscapes, feel free to ask.
