Description

Oedemera nobilis: this peculiar beetle has strange-looking swellings on its hind femurs. This appears to be a sexually-selected character: used by males to demonstrate fitness to females. This type of adaptation is widespread in insects and birds, but there is still debate about the circumstances in which such features evolve. It was crawling over this plant which I liked as it threw off a lovely green light Thanks for taking time to look and any comments you care to make

It's the bodybuilder approach - "the more bulky and ungainly I look, the more women will throw themselves at me" :) Excellent capture of a really strange bug!
