Description

Another oil. For some reason, the colors in this have come out poorly from my digital camera and there is some extra shine in there, so imagine him with quite black hair. The (b&w) reference image I had for this guy had a lot of light coming from below (not sure why!), which made the whole thing quite hard to paint. I'm also not completely confortable with the different color tones in his face compared with his chest. But I think his shirt really came out well. If I had the patience, I'd fix up his mouth shape so the cigar fitted better.

You should stick to painting, your realism is much better than with Poser... LOL. Paul it's a pleasure to see you work in other mediums and actually you have a very good control of them. I'm impressd, to the point you move outside the square... screen I mean. Excellent buddy, don't mind you own crits, it would be a pleasure to hang this on my wall... EXCELLENT!!! (BIG VOTE)

This is really great, Paul. I had no idea you were so accomplished in the 2D medium as well. Great character. I'd like to see more of this from you.

Hi Paul, I don't know how much painting you do, but it's obvious you like a challemge... loose cloth and portraiture in the same scene :) I think you have handled both extremely well. The background has a nice out of focus feel to it that adds depth to the image. The only area I'm at all uncomfortable with is the chest. The style doesn't quite match the rest of the image. It looks a bit more rushed and consequently tends to pull my attention back to it ... but that's from someone who couldn't even begin to match the overall quality of the work.

Wonderful painting!! I also think what you have done in Poser is amazing. And this just shows what an incredible talent you are. I am also curious--the loss of the intense blacks (they almost always appeared gray) is identical to what I got when photgraphing my daughter's oil paintings. And I am almost certain it was due to the flash I used. I am not an expert photographer, but would be curious to know if you used a flash and if so, try taking the picture without a flash. But it is a wonderful painting!!

I like this painting, the expression is fantastic. Looks really like an cuban worker. You are very talented here also!! IMO the glow of the cigar needs some yellow spots. To make photos from paintigs i would use an tripod, place the camera in the exact middle of the image and add one neonlight from both sides. Move them until no reflections are shown, make manual whitepoint-calibration and shoot with the timer. This gives best sharpness and colors. ~Uwe
