Description

A rare view of babies "woodpeckers" from inside a tree, right from day one till departure from the nest to the wilderness !I'll be posting more photos of these little beauties, if there is some interest! See more pictures on Webshots How did I do it???? :) Well!!!! Don't know if I should tell you this, but I cheated just a little bit this time!!! I toke the liberty and the very big gamble of slightly enlarging the hole a bit more, to accommodate my small camera, and it paid off! "Mother Flicker" did'nt mind too much, for as long as I did'nt touch the chicks, she carried on just like nothing had happen!Wooff!!! Thank God,and mother flicker!:)Some woodships did fall on the chicks as you can see, but the housework was done the very next day!Way to go maman flicker! The nest was about 6 feet off the ground, and at the very least, a foot and half deep into the tree, and about 7 inches of diametre!Pretty small home for six birds if you can imagine! In this case, she had chosen a poplar tree snag, very easy to dig out because of the softness of the wood, and not so blody hard on the neck,I guess!:) Seven eggs were laid, six hatched, and five chicks survived! Pretty good advrage if you ask me!Would'nt of never found the site,if there would'nt been so many woodships at the base of the tree! At the touch of the tree, the sound that came out of the hole, was unbelievable! Sounded like a swarm of bees coming right at you! Never heard anything quite like it!Scarry to say the least! To tell you the truth,it did'nt smell very good neither standing above the nest, because like I said, one did'nt hatched, and one little chick did'nt make it !So sad!!! :( It was extremely hard for me to have everything in focus, the deepness of the nest, small apearture against the round wall, could'nt see the result of my shots, till it were taken! Auto focus does'nt always work in those situations!I'm pretty happy about the result, what do you think? Thanks for looking, and for your comments! Have a great day everybody!Take care:)

Ciao Paul ! Bon dimanche Paul. Hugz.

I know! I know! But what i did'nt know before i enlarge the hole was, what was inside that tree!Curiosity was stronger than anything, and the occasion was rather unique if there was flickers! But i can assure you that nothing has happen to them! They are all gone now ,free as birds, all five of them! Thanks for your concerns and great comments! More to come soon! Have a wonderful week everyone! Paul:)
