Description

The Grapevine Beetle is a striking, moderately large beetle with feathery antennae. This fellow was about 1 inch in size. It is found throughout the eastern US. This was the first one I've ever noticed and it's all because Renderosity and digital photography has opened my eyes! 8-) It's always a thrill to find a large beetle along the path, right? You know the feeling? Well... this one was found flying around in my den last night! EEEKS!!! The spotted grapevine beetle is a member of the 'Scarab' beetle family. It resembles a light tan Junebug. It has 6 small black dots on the wing covers. The adults feed on grape foliage but are not a significant pest. The larvae are huge white grubs that live in well-rotted stumps and logs. Adult beetles found on grapevines need only be handpicked and discarded. They are often attracted to outside lights in the evening and I guess this one decided to invite himself in. hehe :-) This photo was taken with my Pentax Optio MX4 and Mr. Beetle was shoooed out of my house, unharmed, after I finished clicking several shots of him. Hope you enjoy! Thank you all so very much for your kind comments and advice. :-) This is the best group of folks!! Have a great weekend. (((hugs))) ~*~maggie~*~

Oh wow nice pic maggie! BTW those beetles have been very plentiful this summer. I've had tons of them coming in my house. I think its because its been exremely dry and hot outside and inside they can find water condensation on pipes etc. Thats probably why they are coming in so much. I haven't seen as many since we finally got some rain. Love the photography maggie awesome work!

"Mr Beetle"..LMAO!!! So youre basically saying that no beetles were harmed in the production of this macro huh? But whatever happened to its left rear leg, lol. I totally hear ya, i never really appriciated bugs untill i started getting up close and personal with them with my lens. Then i discovered that so many of them really are cool looking. And that is one big beetle indeed. Excellent macro and presentation. Have a swell sunday #:O)

Honest!! lol I even have more pics to prove he had the same number when he left as what he came in with...hehehe Thanks so much for the laugh and thank you all for your kind comments! LOL @ nongo too! :-)
