Description

This is a few WIP pictures of my model of the USS Reliant, as seen from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn. The model is made of NURBS surfaces, and has served as a great exercise for me in using the NURBS modeling toolset to a further depth than I had before. I have not textured it yet, beyond applying basic colors to major sections, but I hope to do so soon as well as add the lighting effects. The model was made in Maya 6.0.1 and rendered with mental ray. High resolution (2k) images can be seen here: http://home.comcast.net/~prwsjl/mirandaFront.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~prwsjl/mirandaRear.jpg

I like it! Ive only the learning edition of Maya. I tried to use it, but the number of functions and posibilities overwhelmed me and I gave it up. Maybe Ill make a new attempt to handle Maya later.

Awsome model. Did you post the WIP at CG talk? I think the Miranda is the coolest of the TOS series and films ships with the Oberth class a close second.

wow, thats some seriously impressive modeling work, and with Maya NURBS even :) I saw a few models of this ship over at lwg3d.org, but this one is amazingly accurate. Where did you get your reference from? Ever thought about having it rapid prototyped? :)

thanks folks, appreciate the commens! Yes I had a wip thread of this model at CGTalk and also a few other websites. Most of the reference came from a book I have that has big pics of the studio prop (Trek Mechanics). I don't think I'll be making any physical props anytime soon, but the idea is intriguing :) cheers

Nice modeling job! I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for the fully textured version in the future, the model looks spot on from the film!

Absolutely incredible, my favorite of all the ships. If my memory is any good this ship looks almost flawless. Excellent modeling and good luck in your texturing.
