Description

"Put the camera down, pick the can opener up. FEED ME!" Wukka had a few calm months where she stayed out of trouble. Alas, the peace was short-lived. At work there is a walk-in fridge that has a very heavy door. The mantra has always been,"Don't slam the door! Watch out for the cats!" At the end of one particularly grueling day, an exhausted employee accidentally slammed the door right on Wukka's tail. After finally finding her hiding place and taking her to the vet ( who is luckily right across the street from work ) we determined that a). the tail was split open lengthwise down to the bone, and b). a chunk of flesh was missing. Amazingly, it was not broken. It took 14 stitches in 2 layers to close it. I was allowed to assist. It had to be stitched tight due to the missing piece. Wukka hated the feel of it and attacked her tail, popping half a dozen stitches by the next morning. She also violently refused a hood. Back to the vet, a large thick bandage plus extra covering, problem solved. NOT! She attacked the bandage and swished her tail violently around, smashing it into things. Back to the vet, bandage off, tail infected, more anesthesia, hood put on while she is drugged, problem solved. NOPE! She smashed the hood into her tail and was able to get at the injured part despite the hood. By this time we are at week 4 after the initial injuury, Back to the vet, advised that she must stop self-mutilating, or the tail will need to be amputated. Back to work, consensus there is amputation. I refuse. Desperate, I make a contraption from a bottle to go over the wound so she can smash the tail all she wants because the wounded area is suspended in the middle, touching nothing. Back to the vet, more anesthesia, wound cleaned again, contraption put on, problem solved. AS IF! By the next morning she has it off. Tomorrow.......does the tail come off too? I like this photo simply because it is funny.

Ah, the ever-popular hood! Cats just love those things, don't they. Wukka seems like a very determined cat!
