Description
OK this was an image done by me in a freeware raytracer called POVray, some good few years back, when I first started out. I was still working in Windoze 3.1 and Povray was running via the good ole dos-prompt..lol! Render took about 11 hours on me old 33MHz 386. Everything was done by hand, a shyte load of work, since POVray is entirely text-based, no pointing & clicking stuff here. Well, I liked it at the time, so I thought I'd share :) POVray's site is at www.povray.org for the adventurous among you ;)

Very very impressive. The glass look is is superbly well done. I think the only thing I dislike about the picture are the green bottoms to the chess pieces, and that is merely and asthetic's thing. lol Other than that. BRAVO

Excellent reflections on the wood! finally someone bumps them! This work shows great attention to detail, and as for the green bottomed chess pieces, strange at first, but I live them. 11 hours!!! Yikes!

This is excellent work. i really love it, green bases and all! i have been looking at povray for a couple of days now, deciding if i want to learn it. Do You think that the final image outcome is worth the render time?

Thanx, designoddysey, it was a shyte load of work.. hehe. There is definitely quite a steep learning curve with POV, as it is basically a whole programming language on its own, but I have found that most of the stuff I have done in POV was some of my best work, regarding renders. The rendertime is not so bad if you compare it to high end packages like MAX and Maya etc. Mostly it is reflections, refractions and volume lighting that increases rendertimes. Bryce is of course in a class of its own, it is WAY too slow for me. If you do get the chance.... go to www.irtc.org and go look at the results of the competition. Most of the stuff there was done in POV. You can also try using Moray as a GUI interface for doing scenes, although it makes it a bit trickier to hand edit the scene afterwards, but a lot of people find it worth it. Have fun !! :)
