Description

Tent Rocks formed over a 100,000 year period nearly 7 million years back. Ever since, the forces of erosion have scoured the area, pushing back the canyon walls and exposing the tents, teepee-shaped formations of volcanic debris for which the area is named. Still, it will take a few more millions of years for the wind and rain to completely polish the area. In the meantime, Tent Rocks is a good place to witness erosion in action. The cliff faces show tan, pink and gray layers of volcanic ash, pumice and tuff. Above these softer layers are more resistant layers of sandstone and other rocks. As the softer layers below wash and blow away, the caprock breaks up and falls, exposing more of the softer material and continuing the cycle. Young tents that are just emerging from the valley walls often still wear a protective cap of resistant rock, while many of the older ones that now stand free on the valley floor have lost their caps and are rapidly aging. The many sandy washes in the area are littered with small bits of volcanic glass called Apache Tears. Roughly polished and anywhere from the size of a BB to as big as a grape, they are free for the picking and make a great souvenir. Filmed at Tent Rocks: Silverado, Lonesome Dove, Young Guns II, High Desert Kill (USA Cable production starring Chuck Connors), Earth II (NBC sci-fi special written by Steven Spielberg) Thanks for viewing and comments.
