Description

Taking his chances in big surf, this throw net fisherman is after his dinner. A normal throw net is approx. 6' long with a diameter of around 12' when fully opened. This net is sewn with regular fishing line using anywhere from 12-25 lb. test, and weighs in around 10-12 lbs. Lead weights are strung along the bottom to help the net sink to the bottom when thrown. Once thrown the net is retrieved by slowly picking up the edges of the net and gathering it in a bunch in the center of the net. It is a very efficient albeit, a dangerous way to fish. Sewing this net takes many months to complete and much patience. Sewing a net has become almost a lost art in Hawaii because of the time it takes to complete it. I have fished with a throw net most of life, and find it quite a challenging way to fish. This type of fishing is non-selective and you never really know what you will catch...you just hope you get something. 90% of the time I don't even see the fish, I just know where they like to hide in the white water...as does this fisherman. Thanks for having a peek and your kind comments on previous posts...Aloha to All~
