Description

July 14, 1986. I was 13 years old and just found out I was an insulin dependent diabetic. Shots for the rest of my life I can handle but those hideous medic alert bracelets were a problem. They've always been a problem for me. I hate them. Four days ago, a woman named Sharon told me she had the same problems with the bracelets. She had decided to get a tattoo of the symbol on her arm. She sent me pictures of her tattoo and today, I went and got mine. The tattoo is located at the pulse point on my arm and a medic will see it when he takes my pulse. This is tattoo number 12 for me. Thanks for viewing.

My father had to have a Medic Alert bracelet with his diabetes, and then subsequent kidney failure, and I know what you mean about the problems. I think this is an excellent solution (and I really don't like tattoos, but in this case). :)

I am lucky and fortunate. 19 years and I have no complications from it. I recently changed jobs and have to be driving the car a lot now. I also got custody of the step children so it seemed important to have the diabetes known to everyone.

An excellent idea. My mom has diabetes thank goodness it is a mild one. She still has to take care though.

As an EMT I can tell you that it is critically important to had some form of ID with you at all times - and that goes double for people who suffer from diabetes, or other conditions that EMT's should be immediately aware of. While a tattoo is a permanent construct - I would also recommend a SHOE tag with your info if you don't like the bracelet or necklace. Wear it outside the shoe - with the laces. My concern with the tattoo for diabetics is the healing time/skin ulcers, etc. Nevertheless - an interesting solution to your problem.
