Description

A storm over Atlantic City last weekend produced a huge number of thunderbolts. I couldn't resist to try to capture one, even though I didn't have a tripod with me. ######### In case pm_hackworth checks back, or anyone else would like to know - here are some details about this shot. This technique worked for me and it is pretty simple. Camera: Nikon D70 Lense: Nikkor 18-70 F: 4.5 Focal length: 56 mm ISO: 250 Exposure: 5 s I had to switch the AF off on the lense completely and operate in a full manual mode to allow the camera to focus in absolute darkness. After making a few unsuccessful shots at 1/2 second exposure I figured I should set it higher without worrying about over-exposure too much because it was pitch black and the only thing that would get on the camera would be a lightning, so I set it to 5s and started making non-stop shots of the area where the last couple of the thunderbolts hit. After a while I just erased unsuccessful shots from memory. This particular image is actually cropped about 80%. I captured a few more bolts, but this one came out the sharpest. My guess is that it probably hit right at the end of the 5s time and didn't get smeared by a hand-shake. I wish I had my tripod... (sigh). Hope you like it :) Thanks for viewing and all your comments! O.

WOW! 5 seconds! you have a steadier hand than me. And to not flinch when the strike happens. Great work. I captured one, but using a different method (ie, take 200 rapid shots and hope lighting strikes) Well done, I know how hard this is.
