Description

"Airial View of Mt. Adams" " Klickitat " Mt. Adams rises 12,276 feet above sea level and is about 62 miles due east of Mount St. Helens. This southern view shows some fairly new debris avalanches ( rustly / brown stuff ) another good reason to not live to near Little Brother Klickitat . Local Native American legends are full of storys descibing the brothers Wy'east (Mt. Hood) and Pahto (Mt. Adams) battling for the fair La-wa-la-clough (Mt. St. Helens). Behaviors attributed to Wy'east include hurtling of hot rocks from gaping holes, sending forth streams of liquid fire, loss of formerly high summits, and choking of valleys with rocks. Northwest Indians told many stories to early explorers about the fiery Mount St. Helens. An Indian name for the mountain, Louwala-Clough, means "smoking mountain". According to one legend, the mountain was once a beautiful maiden, "Loowit". When two sons of the Great Spirit "Sahale" fell in love with her, she could not choose between them. The two braves, Wyeast and Klickitat fought over her, burying villages and forests in the process. Sahale was furious. He smote the three lovers and erected a mighty mountain peak where each fell. Because Loowit was beautiful, her mountain (Mount St. Helens) was a beautiful, symmetrical cone of dazzling white. Wyeast (Mount Hood) lifts his head in pride, but Klickitat (Mount Adams) wept to see the beautiful maiden wrapped in snow. I shot the image out of the window seat in a 747 heading back to sunny California. Used a Sony CD Mavica 350 with a 6X zoom . Most of the 30 + images turned out hazey like a foggy shroud. Thank God for Adobe photo shop its always saving my images for me. Klickitat bends his head and weeps more debris, as he gazes upon the once beautiful Loowit. She is now half the woman she was before , her marvelous peaks torn asunder. but like the phoenix she will rise again from the ashes to her once former glory and the brothers will once again start the battle for her affection . So it was ,So it is , So it will always be.
