Description

"For he being dead, with him is beauty slain, And, beauty dead, black chaos comes again." --William Shakespeare "There were some who said that a man at the point of death was more free than all others, because death breaks every bond, and over the dead the united world has no power." --Francois De Salignac Fenelon "I slept, and dreamed that life was beauty; I woke, and found that life was duty." --Ellen Sturgis Hooper "Let us live for the beauty of our own reality." --Charles Lamb "Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old." --Franz Kafka

Several of you have questioned just what it is I've been showing in my past two gallery images. Well, this should bring it into perspective. It is my son's recently deceased Blackmoor goldfish, Aku. We aren't sure why he died, but I saw an opportunity to make something of this minor tragedy and took some photos. In life, goldfish are always moving and quite hard for me to photograph. With death comes stillness and a chance to appreciate the details that were otherwise hidden by their constant motion. Interestingly, I noted that as time passed, Aku's scales lost their blackness and took on new colors. It is almost as if death freed him to a beauty he could not experience in life. Strange, but I guess there can be a beauty in death. We are on Aku #2 now, let us hope you don't see any pictures of him. ;'] ----- BLACKMOOR GOLDFISH Carassius auratus var - Family: Cyprinidae This goldfish is entirely black with pronounced, protruding eyes. There are several sub-species with chunkier bodies, differently shaped tails, and body tones ranging from a dull matt finish to a lustrely black with a gold-tinged hue around the belly. There are also other goldfish with similar physical attributes as the Blackmoor except for the colour, which is widely varied. These are commonly known as Telescope Eye Goldfish. They are considered "fancy fish" in that they are not as hard and strong as the usual goldfish. They can grow to be just as large as normal goldfish but are more rounded and less stocky. There is no doubt that goldfish has more varieties than any other aquarium fish. The intense interest that the Chinese and Japanese have shown, in domesticating the goldfish goes back possibly 1350 years to the T
