Several of you have questioned just what it is I've been showing in my past two gallery images. Well, this should bring it into perspective. It is my son's recently deceased Blackmoor goldfish, Aku. We aren't sure why he died, but I saw an opportunity to make something of this minor tragedy and took some photos. In life, goldfish are always moving and quite hard for me to photograph. With death comes stillness and a chance to appreciate the details that were otherwise hidden by their constant motion. Interestingly, I noted that as time passed, Aku's scales lost their blackness and took on new colors. It is almost as if death freed him to a beauty he could not experience in life. They are considered "fancy fish" in that they are not as hard and strong as the usual goldfish. They can grow to be just as large as normal goldfish but are more rounded and less stocky. There is no doubt that goldfish has more varieties than any other aquarium fish. The intense interest that the Chinese and Japanese have shown, in domesticating the goldfish goes back possibly 1350 years to the T
