When I was ten years old, I was invited to have supper at my best friend's home. It was the first time I had ever tasted turnip. At first sample I was actually terrified... it was such a foreign flavor and yet it was somehow exotic enough that I couldn't dismiss it as poison right away. Intriguing in a love/hate sense. It was also the first time that I would meet someone who was older than my grandmother. My friend's great aunt was seated next to me at the dinner table. She was very old and very frail... and in my young mind I thought she was the reason we all had to eat turnip.

She seemed unaware of me throughout most of the meal... but just before dessert was served (cheesecake... another first for me) she leaned down and stared into my face. I put my hands in my lap and stayed very still... the turnip terror now replaced with a general feeling of unease... and she whispered into my ear, "One day someone is going to run away with those big, brown eyes of yours".

That night... safely home and in my own bed... I wrote about this turn of events in my diary. And I remember ending the entry with, "... so if someone is going to run away with my brown eyes, please let it be Paul McCartney"...
