Description

"fluffgirl" was asking about this in my last post of Mt. Rushmore. Crazy Horse Mountain is several miles away from there as the crow flies. Chief Henry Standing Bear invited Sculptor Korzak Ziolkowski to build this monument in 1946. It had to be in the Black Hills of South Dakota which are sacred to the Lakota Indians, and asked that it be named after Crazy Horse, who is a hero to many Native Americans. The mountain is a work in progress for over 50 years now. Seven of Korczak's ten children work on the sculpture, along with an entire crew. The design is based on the fact that when asked "where are your lands now?" Crazy Horse pointed and said, ..."My lands are where my dead lie buried". The first image shows a small scuplture at the visitors' center showing what the finished sculpture will look like. You can see the mountain in the background. The white mark painted on the mountain is where the horse's ear will be. The closer views show the the head, which is 87 -1/2 feet high. The finished mountain will be 641 ft. long by 563 feet high. The photos don't do the mountain justice, and just cannot capture the magnitude, size, emotion and beauty of the mountain. Thanks very kindly for your views and comments, ...Maria

Yes, it is a huge monument, or will be if they ever manage to finish it. Great shot of it here, and I enjoyed the trivia too. =]

This is an incredible story, Maria, and I remember being transfixed by a documentary we saw on TV about it a while back. It's just amazing how generations get involved in one project like this, and so tragic how in the meantime, their lands become dessecrated... Your photos are fine, and really do give a sense of perspective, although no doubt when you have BEEN there, it makes it hard for you to feel you have conveyed it with justice.. Thanks for sharing.
