Description
A few weeks ago, my mom unearthed a Sears catalogue, circa 1953. We spent quite awhile flipping through the glossy pages and marvelling at the low prices for everything except refrigerators, televisions and washing machines... those items were terrifically expensive for the times.
One of the pages that caught my eye was a layout for women's hats. Evening hats, they were. Some sprouting plumes and sporting rhinestones... folded and contoured velvets and satins. Many were equipped with netting which required the wearer to peer through a virtual screen door all the wearing while. Trendy, perhaps... but in an elegant and quiet way.
These days a very different fashion statement echoes loudly through the closets of young women. Brand new bluejeans are taken from several manufacturers warehouses and trucked out to the desert. Spread out on rocks and dunes in various heaps and piles, they are then sprayed with 50 caliber machine gun fire. Once washed and labelled, the ragged and frayed bullet holes fetch top-dollar for these trendy "designer" jeans. And in 1963, Bob Dylan wrote, "The Times They Are A-Changin'".
Thanks so much for putting up with my ramblings... and for your thoughts and words on my previous stuff. And thank you for stopping by to peek at this one. :) Hugs! Helen

just a walk in the local mall and what sights to be had.no matter the generation teenagers has to do something to drive their parents/ adults crazy. my mother (deceased) would not let me do any of the trends for my teenage years ,but then again there was no money for anything except the necessities and they went unanswered many times."we was so poor, I could not pay attention" now they have a name for that!excellent work Helen and the details really are sharp

Wonderful spiral, Helen! I especially like the spheres of veil-like netting. And a great background story. I also remember my grandma wearing those elegant chapeaux.

Gorgeous, Helen! I love the bee-hive look of some of the spheres, and the way that contrasts with the other shapes. Bravo!!

I can hear the song in my head! Fascinating spiral, there is such a great variety of surfaces and textures in here. We can look back at the hats with veils, which I remember but never wore, with wonder and hopefully someday we will also look back on the jeans of today. Lots of mine have holes in them but that's just because I hate shopping!

50 Calibre machine gun cartridges are very expensive :-) - alas, change is the natural order of events in the Universe - unfortunately, it is not always for the better. Superb image here. Well done indeed! V

Beautiful as always Helen ! You know I might have had one of those hats from that very catalogue you and your mom looked at ! I have a closet full of hats - even a collectors hat from Paris ! I only wear them to church on Sunday mornings or "special" occasions ! That might be because "my mom" always wore one to church on Sunday mornings - not sure ! Sounds so nice - you doing that with your mom . Give our love to that "special" lady .
