Mr. Jackson is not the commander of the armed forces and all their resources. Mr. Bush is. As leader of the country, it was Mr. Bush's job to respond quickly. His lack rapid response means many more died, and are still dying.

You're right that Jackson is not the commander in cheif: He's a lowlife media-chaser who has made a lifetime career out of showing up in every crisis and blowing his own horn. Hate Bush if you want, that's fine: But the first responders in every crisis are the LOCAL, not Federal authorities. The LOCAL authorities left 205 school buses sitting empty that could have been used to evacuate 15,000 poor, sick, and elderly BEFORE Katrina hit. They did NOTHING for their own but cut and run. The Federal aid effort is no slower than in any other crisis we've seen: What's different here is that the local authorities did nothing to prepare, lead, or protect their own citizens, leaving a far bigger mess than was necessary.

I am not an American I am a Canadian who closely follows the news in your country, For months now I have watched the heads of your "Homeland Security" congratulate themselves and barg as to how ready they are to handle any catastrophic event. Based on what has been witnessed this week particularly in New Orleans every one of those lying basterds should be fired. You have been lied to America. By the way I just happen to love the USA but the way your revered leaders have handled this tragic situation is shameful and beyond belief. They don't give a dame !

This was meant to be a criticism of Jessie Jackson, self-proclaimed black leader. When a category five was heading for the states with 'his' people, where was he? He was down in South America schmoozing it up with Hugo Chavez. He only showed up in New Orleans after they started to restore order. He is a self-severing media chaser who I think only pretends to care so he can get more face time in the media. Now to address the Pres. Bush thing. Whatever you may believe to the contrary, Bush is not a dictator with absolute power to make things happen instantly, he is a president with checks and balances on what he can do. The Federal Government can't act in a state without a federal crime happening or the state government's permission. Now with that background in place we can go through a factual timeline. Fact 1: As Katrina made landfall in Florida, Pres. Bush made available federal aid and programs to states. Louisiana Governor didnt make any request for assistance under those available programs as the storm headed their way. She only called up about 6,000 National Guard for the whole state of Louisiana. Fact 2: The day after the storm Pres. Bush toured the area in Air Force One. He declared the area a disaster, which again opened up program federal programs to assist the state authorities. It wasnt until the next day that the Governor approved receiving assistance. Fact 3: On Wednesday, Pres. Bush called for Congress to approve 10.5 billion in disaster relief. Congress doesnt decide until the next day to come back early from their vacation. And the day after that, Friday, they approve Pres. Bushs funding bill. Fact 4: Also on Wednesday, finally receiving a request for help from the state, federal assistance begins to roll toward Louisiana, but doesnt start getting there until the next day because of physical distance and obstacles. New Orleans Mayor declares Marshal Law, an action that actually takes an act of Congress to declare. Fact 5: Thursday, federal aid starts arriving. Pres. Bush finalizes plans for a ground tour the next day. Fact 6: Friday, as order is being restored Pres. Bush does his ground tour and comments the government response has been very lacking (i.e. the state government has been waiting for everybody else to take care of the problem, but slow to give approval to do so). The Mayor of New Orleans finally immerges from the hotel hes been hiding in and shuttles his out of town friends to the Super Dome. At the Super Dome the Mayor has his friends cut to the front of the line, in front of all his tired hungry citizens, to the rescue buses leaving the state (great guy, ahey). Therefore, Pres. Bush has been out there doing his job. Can the Louisiana Governors Office, New Orleans Mayor, and US Congress say the same?

One can only hope that a helping hand also comes from all those that are busy pointing fingers.

Funny piece. Almost as funny as Eddie Murphy doing the Poverty Pimp on SNL years ago. And those who say Bush is at fault for ANY of the problems of Katrina have NO understanding of actual events or the procedures of disaster relief. Ignorance is such a pity in this information age.
