Description

Well this is a first, I couldn't think of a name for this image, so if any of you guys can think one up I'll repost it with that title ;) I made the old farmhouse, baseball cap, stile, and the wheel in truespace 6.6. I made the flowers in PlantStudio. While playing in Vue, I came across a pretty cool and rather effective method of creating distant forests without using millions of alpha planes or tree models. First create a terrain, and reduce its vertical height. Then apply a bump function to it (from within the terrain editor), keeping the function to a small scale across the terrain. Try to create a small-scale undulating bump rather than a strong pointy bump (this represents the profile of the tree tops. Then apply the colour - use a colour function to mix, randomise it. Now here's the cool part: use a variable transparency function on the terrain. What I did was set the transparency so that it was dependant on height, setting the slider to 100%. Thus, the transparencies only occur at higher regions of the terrain. I also used a complex fractal function to randomise the transparency, and played with the scale. The overall result, I think, is pretty effective. It works best if the terrains are set at a distance, and in silhouette against the sky. There ends the mini-tutorial :D Cheers

To all those long lost summer sunsets of our childhoods... wonderful image. A bit grainy in parts, but an overall great image with very warm lighting. Nicely done! :o)

A very pretty and serene pic. Thanks for the info on the distant trees, but did you know that there is a distant tree terrain object in the Vue objects? I've used it in several images and it works quite well.
