Description

A few houses further in the street there's another garden or open place where I find something unexpected, the alpine sea holly (Eryngium alpinum). I don't see a house close to this place so I feel free to shoot this fantastic plant with large flowers visited by wasps and bees. The theatricality of the feather boa look with the more animal yellow black of the wasp suddenly reminds me I have not thought about the diffrence between wasps and hornets in a while. Bees are fuzzy and wasps have short bodies with yellow stripes and no fuzz but aren't hornets the ones with long abdomens? The last hornet I saw was a black one that got on my knee as I was riding my motorcycle 23 years ago. Even farther back are what we called "sweat bees" for the times when they came.
