Description

Welcome to the labratory of the imfamous alchemist Dr. John Dee. I'm new at Maya so I really would like comments and suggestions.

I like it a lot. As suggested in the 3D forum the flame needs some variation in color. I would also add shape to that, to give it some undulation. A little wax dribble might help too. And I am not sure what the arc shaped thing in the left foreground is. Is it a quill? If so, it needs some ribbing to make it look more like a feather. Bear in mind, I know nothing about Maya so I have no idea how you would do such things. ;) Good luck on the mid-term. jon

First of all, I know nothing about Maya so I don't know how to do what I'd suggest doing. That said,... Everything is way too clean and the reflective surfaces are way too reflective. I'd sugget trying to add grime/grunge maps and specular maps to all the surfaces to break the texture up a little. The candle flame has already been commented on. There is noticable faceting in the decantor(?)(Glass bottle) and the platter that rest against the wall behind it. While it's true that that could be the way they actually are, because there is no noticable light differences in the surface (of the bottle anyway) one doesn't draw that conclusion. If it weren't the for the bottle and candle reflections in the platter you might not see it at all. This is because the reflection is too high and that there is no opposing wall to reflect so all you have is empty black. Maybe put in another wall or something behind the camera to give it something more to reflect. I don't know what the thing in the left forground is either. All in all it's a good composition. A little more attention to the details and this could be a stuning peice.
