A Tiger for Mea (Photoshop) www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php

I have been drawing since I was 11, some 33 years ago.
My 6th grade teacher, Mr. Knoss, was a great artist and I greatly admired his illustrations. He encouraged me to pursue my artistic interests at a crucial time in my development.
My High School art teacher "Vern", was also a great influence. He always challenged me to try different things.
I was lucky that my parents were very supportive of my interest in art. I studied at The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (1986-1990). Where I was humbled by many great artists that were far more talented than I. There it was that I rounded out my fine art skills, and then chose to major in Media Arts. Studied film, video and sound. Learned all the skills needed to shoot, direct, edit those mediums.
While pursuing a Media Arts major, I discovered computer graphics, still in it's infancy. This is where I came to an Epiphany. Here was a new medium, that incorporated everything I had previously learned into one new medium. Not only that, but it had new dimensions, interactivity, feedback, randomness, AI. I was hooked.
The next 17 years I learned and grew with the industry. Learning everything from how to create and manipulate digital imagery and create animations, to interface design and interactive authoring. My day job is an Information Architect, a fancy term for software interface design.
A few years back, my wife and I hit on some difficult times (As many people do) and it was during a very dark time in our lives that I discovered what became Renderosity, Initially I posted work, merely as a way to get myself back into the discipline of making new art.
I was delighted to find a world-wide community of talented artists, exchanging ideas and art!! I was thrilled! I have learned so much from you, and your art has brightened up my world. I am lucky to have made some great friends here, and I aim to do tributes to all of you!

Honestly, some people will steal anything that's not nailed down...this is really fantastic. So much going on and I'm so glad you were able to keep at least this marvelous piece.

Thanks gang! You're the best! Oops I had the date wrong on the title! I fixed that. Also forgot to mention the assignment, a computer self portrait! I actually scanned a photo of me, back when my hair was long! (Hey it was the 80's, and I was young). Thanks for the comments and viewing. 09/10/2005 [Delete]

AW!I know how you must have felt.My car was stolen when I was in college and all my artwork was in it at the time.It was horrible. So I am happy for you that this at least survived. Its wonderful, btw.A bit of Roy Lichtenstein I think. As far as your hair,I am seeing more and more young men with their hair like that these days.Evidently,80's hair is coming back,at least for men.LOL!Thank goodness it's not for women.I don't think I could pull off the 'madonna' look any more!!!Great post Eric. It's fun to see the origins of your skills.-M :)

too cool....it is fun to see what was done, I saved stuff on disks, but now the OS is different so a lot of things, including programs are just too old and unless I find one of those old old machines still working they will remain unused...and I just don't throw them out ...well because I think about how much went into getting them in the first place....ha ha a box of 5 1/4 floppies only recently made its way to the trash....and all the great stuff I just had to save...

A wonderful piece of artwork. I would imagine it took a lot of time making this back then. Sorry about the loss of your works. My compliments on this.

I do enjoy seeing "old" stuff. Actually this really is of it's era, and I'm sure we would have all been so impressed with it back in 1986, as it's still got it now! It's also refreshing to see this after all the digital gloss around these days. I do line work still, as I discovered this ancient wireless device called an ink pen! About making back-ups. You can never have too many in my opinion!

Are you talking about a recent theft? If so, man that SUCKS! It's such a violation of your life and makes you feel so uncomfortable. I hate people sometimes. This image just shows what your talent and imagination can do with limited resources. Very well done and sorry to hear about the theft, be it now or in the past.

fascinating creative work when done with only DOS! i'm flashbacked & 16 :]

OK, first, let me WOW!!! I'm feeling all Journey Escape for some odd reason. ;-) In 1986 I was in high school, and the closest I got to computer graphics was one of those um, whatever they're called where you make a picture of Snoopy out of a bunch of letters. Aha! ASCII art. That's what it was. And I wasn't any good at it. lol. Second... somebody stole your disks?? insert angry face here That's just... low. :-(
soffy

Good that this one was saved, gets me kind of nostalgic thinking of the beginning of computer works long time ago. You get me thinkin...maybe it is best to save the backups on a different place, not only on a different drive, thanks!
TwoPynts
I hate that! I had some art stolen a long time back and it still burns me up to this day. It is so cool that you still have this relic, lol. Luv the old video game...and other stuff. Thanks for sharing this.

Touches my heart! I've had disk failures, and my bike and my watch were stolen, let me tell you sometime over lots of beers. At least, you have this, didn't someone say: "It would take lots less time and much fewer beer to describe it, if these darned things would just survive".
estevez
Very interesting and creative composition. Excellent style. Congratulations !
Burpee
Fantastic! I missed this but just saw it now because I saved your IM with all the links to your animations and I play them for a smile sometimes :) I am so sorry that someone stole your art :(

Very interesting work ... I love the spontaneous quality of this interesting piece. I detect an inclination to get in touch with one's inner-tiger ... grrrr-8. :-) Love the style.

Excellent drawing, and I can relate it to some of my works of the late 60's :) It's worthy of keeping, mine however were lost to time!
LaraLuvMe
It may be an oldie but in my eyes its brilliant. It would be great to see more stuff like this. I had to come and see your work after your brilliant comment on Turin_Returns piece about nuclear weapons. Fantastic!
