When using engines derived from James Stockholms work, there's a little problem. The further you travel the less well you can define where you'll end up. So after say 50 light years or so, the percentages change markedly out of your favour. You start with a chance at that point of 99.9% of reaching your wanted destination with about the same amount of drift. You see the futher you want ot travel, the less probability of you getting to where you're wanting to going (it's exponencial as to the inaccurreties) As trade became truelly possible between star systems the only way to guarrentee your destination was to have a "Gate". In essence a Gate is like a beacon. So after one or two alien ships took a look at the Gates, four armed ships would be stationed around the Gates mouth just in case. The ships exiting the Gate 547 are the soon to be decomitioned "Stockholm", and her sister ship "Janes Hope". The "Janes Hope" was built 21 year after the "Stocholm", and the technology had barely changed. So the time was drawing near when many things would change, and not for the better...
