Description

This image is not intended to offend, it's just my reflection.... I Dedicate This.... To all the victims of Katrina that now suffers from additional grief because they had to leave a beloved pet behind. To all the tens of thousands of pets suffering and dying right now, that their sacrifice may in the end mean homes for the ten of thousands animals homeless already in the United States. To all the officials that never considered the pets of the victims as loved ones but only as "personal property" that could be replaced. May this tragedy and the additional hardships this has created teach you something so it never happens again regardless if you ever see an animal as a life that feels. To all the community servants that felt remorse while tearing a loved pet from their owners arms, that this experience may in the future give you the strength to stand up for what is right before all is lost in our society. To all the community servants that turned their head as a grief stricken owner was allowed to hold their pet on their lap to safety. Understanding that to choose to carry a pet away with them instead of clothing or other prized possessions doesn't hurt anything. To all of you who have tried to make a difference and understands what the word compassion really means. Susan

Oh Susan... you've brought tears to my eyes again with this image. My heart just breaks for the people who had to leave their much loved pets behind and all the animals that were left because they were not allowed to be taken. Let's hope that people learn a lesson from this and that the animal refugees from Katrina either find their owners or happy homes... Beautiful and hearlfelt image sweetie and awesome dedication which does not offend me in the least. huge hugglz jen :)

Aye, I know how they feel. And you wonder that I'm a bit cranky? :} Your image is almost gross in it's realism LOL! And to any who might take offense: First, remember that offense is always taken and never given--lies can't hurt an honest person (although believers in them might), and the truth is something we should learn to live by. For those who can't understand these basics: Go "offend" yourself! :D You don't have to look if you don't appreciate it. Liberty is more important than "Political Correctness."

I absolutely agree. I would stay rather than leave my animals and it is ridiculous to make people leave their pets behind.

Fantastic image, and its true most of the times the pets are not taken into account. I would never leave my dog behind and its good to know that a lot of people think the same. Thanks for sharing this image and your great words.

Beautiful pic and the dedication is wonderful. People can manage somehow to gind shelter food water, but pets rely on humans and having to leave them is devistating. so many lost animals so many died. Its tragic! Hugs susan thanks for reminding all of us that animals are people to.

You know, this is something I was thinking about last week. There's no denying the human tragedies but in any situations like this I can never help myself wondering about all those poor helpless animals :( I know if I was ever in that situation everything would be left behind if it meant our beloved pooch was with us and he was safe.

This is a wonderful dedication Susan. It pains me deeply to see pictures of abandonned animals sitting on what remains of their home, looking bewildered and confused. My heart goes out to them and to the people who have lost pets. The team sent from New Mexico is rescuing pets now, and many have been brought here. I can imagine the heartbreak that these people feel....when I was a teenager, I lost my cat I had had for 15 years because he was murdered by a man who hated cats. I had nightmares for years and years, because I felt that I had abandonned him, even though it was not my fault at all. Pets can be as important to people as other people. They give such unconditional love, and thus, get unconditional love in return. Your work is excellent but it and very effective at communicating the devastation to the pets and their owners. So Sad.

Oh Susan, this is such a fabulous dedication. I have worried so much about the animals. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see the abandonned animals that people were forced or could not avoid leaving behind. There is no relationship quite like that between a pet and his/her owner. I would be devasted if I were in that Position. It is interesting.....I just uploaded an image about loss of a child or loved one. We must be on the same page....guess that is one of the reasons we are " Pals ". I want to give some huge hugs to all those who have lost a pet that was dear to them. This trajedy goes on and on with losses mounting every day. I pray for the end of suffering for both paople and animals to come soon. HUGS to all the pets I love and the people they belong to. May they never have to experience a pain such as this.

Hearing this happening has just torn my hearth up! I love my cats as if they are family members and i know that i will suffer greatly when they will eventually leave - but it is life and i know that must happen - but the thought of having to leave them behind is something that i just cannot imagine - only thinking about it make me feel sick! Your image is not only beautiful, but a very worthy and heartfelt dedication - i say thank you for doing it! And my thought are with all the people who lost a loved one, be it man or else.

Wow, this is such a realistic looking image, and really portrays the loss some people had to endure. The loss of a pet is like losing a family member. I can't imagine having to leave my cat and fish and chinchilla to fend for themselves in a flooded home. You really have made a strong statement with your beautiful render, and I hope that many more pets will be found and returned to their owners.

Love this image and your words! I only bought a dog (Sloughi) once, all my other cats and dogs i have and had were thrown away from some people without a heart. On the other side my pets and i eat meat, i have no answer for the question, if cats and dogs count more than rabbits or cows... ~Uwe

Great Job Susan. It seems there is a lot wrong about what has just happened. Unfortunately I think things would have been vastly different had it been a predominantly white state. That's another argument though and probably best not to go into it here. Fine work Susan.

I feel your statement. I take care of a cat and I don't think I could leaave her behind in a disaster like Katrina...even at the expense of my own life. I wouldn't want to live with that scar.

I am just truly speechless with the amount of devastation this tragedy has wreaked physically and emotionally. I agree that the poor animals didn't have any way to escape or protect themselves except at the mercy of people to look after them. It truly makes me sick thinking about all the life lost in all forms and it's truly depressing and has really sent waves of emotions over me lately. This is an outstanding image, so graphic and intense, and the sentiments are almost shouted out in a scream for mercy. Outstanding artwork and heartfelt dedication.
