Description

Inspired by brevis' breath-taking astro images, I decided to get my little 3" refractor out and shoot the moon. It's about as easy a first target as there is in the night sky. Any tips or critiques are always welcome.

Orion 3" refractor CAT (CAT = Cheap-Ass Telescope) with a Nikon D100 at prime focus. ISO set to 200, exposure was 1/180 second. Some post-processing for contrast and to eliminate chromatic abberation caused by the CAT.

I do love astronomic shots but do not have the material to perform it 'cause I'm mostly equiped for macro. Your shot is fantastic and so beautiful... A big big V and congratulation for this wonderful performance!

Sure, amorales -- I'll discuss the method I used for this shot. Most scope makers (and many third parties) sell "T-ring" adapters for various models of telescope and camera combinations. One side of the T-ring is threaded to fit into the back of the telescope, and the other is made to fit the lens mount of a specific camera. You remove your star diagonal (or whatever gizmo holds your eyepiece in place) from the back of the telescope and then screw on the T-ring in its place. Next remove the lens from your camera and attach the camera to the T-ring, just like attaching a lens. Now the whole telescope is your camera lens. The modification takes about 20 seconds and is done without any tools. When you order a T-ring, make sure it's made to mate with your specific telescope and your specific camera. At this point if you can't bring the image into focus, you can put an extension tube between the telescope and the T-ring (I didn't need one on the 3" Orion). Any place that sells T-rings probably sells extension tubes as well. Coupling the camera to the back of the scope like this is called "prime focus" astro photography. Other concerns: 1. Use a tracking (motorized) tripod to keep the Earth's rotation from slewing your object across the telescopic view (annoying even with very short exposures because you have to re-center for every shot. Fatal for longer exposures because of the apparent motion). 2. If your camera uses computerized lenses, it may balk at this setup unless it has a manual mode. Best of luck!

Wooooooweeeeeee... excellent! So, that's how you get shots like this. Someday I'll go there with the scope and adapter but first I think I need a decent camera and some more learnin'. hehe. Beautiful shot!
