Description
One of the earliest memories I have of visiting my grandmother (it was a 500 mile drive so we didn't get to visit too often) was the plush chair in her living room... just beside the telephone table. The wooden arms ended in carved lion's heads... the legs sported the detailed paws. It could recline if one moved the metal bar behind the backrest and set it onto a lower metal hook. The burgundy velvet cushions were very coarse and they were stuffed with straw which crackled with every movement. My mother spent most of the time telling me to keep my buckled saddle shoes off the plush fabric.
I remember asking my grandmother if I could have the chair when she died... I can't now believe I had the crass or the nerve to do that... and she said she would make sure it went to me. When she passed away and the executors cleared out her belongings... there was a small piece of paper taped to the underside of that beautiful Morris recliner saying simply, "for Helen".
Sometimes I sit quietly in that chair... running my fingers over the lion's manes... remembering those early years... and just talking to my grandmother. It brings me peace and a sense of utter quiet... much like the samplers on her kitchen walls brought me hours of marvel.
UF3 with border and sig in PSP. I thank you all for your time and words on my previous efforts... and I surely appreciate that you've stopped by to have a look at this one. Hugs! Helen :)

Such beautiful sentiments, and memories! Brought tears to my own eyes, and memories of my own of a chair that went with a vanity table of my own grandma. It had a heart-shaped back of crushed red velvet that matched the seat. At 7, I asked my Grandma the same question...Such memories! That was MY chair at the table for holiday gatherings. When she passed away, I didn't get the vanity, but the chair sits in my room now. I look at it teary-eyed now...As children, we speak with honesty, and adults DO listen with their hearts....THIS is going to favorites for sentimental reasons...Thank you!

My grandfather had a Morris chair made of oak. It now belongs to my brother. Fractal perfection!

I love the fractal and the story was very tender and touching. It made me think back to my grandmothers. I lived in Oregon and they lived in Missouri and we only went to visit them every four years. I missed not having a grandmother close by.

Your memories of your Grandmother have met with very sympathetic audience. As a boy, I loved my grandmother. Her living room was kept locked and the Piano covered with a linen sheet. But I could persuade her to let me play her piano. When I now play mine, I recall those tender moments. Helen, you were your grandmother's Flower. When she saw you sitting there in her lovely chair,I could hear her say," and she sat there and Bloomed, in my cane-bottomed chair." Your art conveys your feelings with remarkable tender use of colour and form with delicate flowers adorning each emotion.

Beautiful fractal on a marvelous background. The background really makes it look like a sampler. Fantastic job. :)

Your rembrance made me cry; what a special and moving story, Helen, and you relate it so beautifully. Your image could certainly be a "sampler" in this "grandma's kitchen"! Beautiful and playful and excellent!

What a lovely story. As the youngest in a large family I never knew my grandmothers. I only have some memories of one grandfather. But I did get one of his chairs. Like yours, a chair of which you can set the bar at the back. But not as lovely decorated with lion's paws. And the image? Beautiful, as always.

Helen, This is such a heartfelt story you relate, and I can identify with your stillness when you sit in the chair. Reading the comments of others also is heartwarming and a few are sad. For me, it was my grandmother's Baldwin piano. At holidays we would all go to her house, and especially at Christmas we would gather around the piano, she would play carols, and we would all sing! To me the piano was the heart of her home. She played old songs. Perhaps ones that a lot of people wouldn't recognize today. 'Under the Double Eagle', 'Black Hawk Waltz', 'Blue Skirt Waltz', just a few that instantly come to mind. Usually she kept it locked, but would unlock it for us and teach us simple songs when we were just beginning to have an interest in playing. When I was around 12, I think. I asked her, "Grandma, May I have your piano when you no longer need it"? Of course, she said yes. Thanks for reminding me of the joy and the love Leanndra, Oh and your fractal is beautiful!
