Both images are nice. So, I think it depends on your purposes and where you want to use it. If you just want a picture of your grandfather I'd say the b&w one (B - i guess) is the one to go with - the wider range of tones gives a better contrast and brings out the details. You could comprimise and try doing the sepia tone in a different way to make the contrast and range better on the sepia'd image to make a version that's "between" these two. Nice photo!

I like the sepia one for the authentic look (coz it makes you think it is older, hence original). The B&W is sharper, and I agree has more detail. But which is A and which is B? And then which one prints better? At the end of the day, I think you must make an emotional decision: which one makes you feel better? Will it be on display? If so, go with your wifes choice, life will probably be easier!! :)

The sepia is best. But the B&W is shaper but the face is do washed out.

In the BW version, you lost a lot of detail in the left side of the face. The sepia one, imo, lacks the contrast from the BW one. So: Load both as layers (if the sizes are identical of course) and merge using transparancy or /and a blend mode. That way both of you can be happy.

It's a squeaker. I prefer the sepia. The BW is a bit too dark in places.

the sepia has more detail, look at the face & light & not as burned out as the b/w :]

Both are very well done. But I have to say Example (A) as there is a bit too much light in (B) and it washes out the image.

Siempre he considerado que una buena imagen es la que tiene m detalles, por ello prefiero es de la izquierda (sepia) (A)

The only photo I've seen of my grandfather is the one on his tombstone. Can you tell us a little about your grandfather? Was he a soldier? Did he see action in the First World War? I prefer the sepia, btw.
